Took the float apart and cleaned the needle valve good and gave the cylinder a squirt of oil

Happy days! Its too late now but for next time: the rubber snorkel on bike carbs become nice and pliable and easy to fit if you pour a kettle full of hot water over it.
My 2c, YMMV etc.

Not so complicated, and not nearly as expensive as a compression tester.
