Cam swap?
09/25/16 at 08:26:13

Wondering if anyone has done just a cam swap (with a different carb and muffler)? Not the higher compression or big bore.
How'd it work out? Which cam did you use?
Have the valve cover off, lots of stuff apart. Don't want to be breaking in a new piston with all the other changes I'm doing. And I'd like to see the beast run this year  Huh
Thought maybe just a different bumpstick might make a slight improvement.
thanks,
-Armen

Yeah, cams are available, I wanna say three levels of differences, not necessary to change carb, but I think that's been done with good effect. Is it cost effective? Ohh, who cares?

If you're going with a cam, exhaust makes sense, but don't forget about the intake, and the head, especially the exhaust side, is just a mess design wise..

Justin,
I put on a 40mm Mikuni flat slide pumper that I had laying around for 20 years from a project that never happened. Mated it with the biggest K+N pod filter that would fit. The muff is the long RYCA unit, which is supposed ly their quietest. Hate loud bikes.
Just emptied my change bucket and have a few bucks to burn  Grin

Armen,
I think I did what you are asking....

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1378864265/30

It has a TM36 flat slide, Mid range cam (see Lancer), ported exhaust, bigger header and a nice flowing muffler.

Once I dialed in the jetting I love it!

Why no big bore h/c ? Get the cylinder coated too. That what wakes it up !

I have a 97mm top end all fondled and lovely. Would actually like to get the bike running before I die. Cam cover is off, so no additional time needed for the bump stick. Don't want to dismember any more.

I went with 97mm & Boretech coating, ported head myself.
I used Webcam standard grind has a little more lift & duration than stock, I didn't want a camy feeling engine just wanted it to breath and be dependable. Also had rockers hard welded.
But for the same money they have 3 other cams.
Cruises at 70 fine, whack the throttle and it pulls hard right past 100 mph that's all I need, very quick as well 0-60/70
Really fun to ride has good power across the board !

Thanks Ruttly,
Sounds great. Trying for the widest possible power band.

Ohhh how I WISH,,,,
The scientific approach, a good, stock engine
Dynoed
Cam swaps, carb, intake, exhaust tunings and dyno between,
Punched out,
Rerun tests,
Carb swap, tests,
Gee, couldn't take more than a few hundred hours and a few thousand dollars.

Wish I had time to dyno my bike , if I had to guess its up around 45 hp after the couple grand I spent that's total clutch, carb, pipe, gaskets, seals etc. It was worth every penny ! She's Fast !

Ok might have spent more than that, maybe as much as,whatever it takes to achieve the goal of a speed & power & dependability!
Very difficult to balance those 3 !!

Here is my version of speed, power, and dependability.   Grin

She's named Bad Attitude for a reason.  (With an almost 1200cc air oil cooled GSX-R engine she is bullet proof)

Armen,
I would suggest you strike up a PM conversation with Lancer.  He worked to develop two of the cam profiles that are out there.  If you want a wide power band I would suggest you confirm with him but I would recommend his mid range cam.  That is what I went with.  It is not extreme but adds some meat to the power.  Then if you have the head off (or if you want to work carefully with rag plugs) you can do some careful simple die grinding with a dremel grinder and take out the restricter that is in the exhaust port outlet.

Lastly if you have extra money after all that then I would recommend considering a carb upgrade if you want to improve throttle response.  Obviously not absolutely needed but one of those nice to have things.  Again Lancer is a key resource there for input and buying assistance.
