Yes, comparing fishing poles and screwdrivers to a gun is like, well..... ...
Screwdrivers, Hammers, Wrenches.
Don’t know, about a ‘fishing pole’. Their are probably some cases, where one was used, in defense or offense.
But, ’screwdrivers’ mentioned.
In one of the talks I give, (and to, other other FST classes as well)
It starts out, with, two big handgun cases on the table.
Wait, for class to quiet down, and every has Big Eyes, because they anticipate, seeing lots of handguns, which most of them have not seen before.
I slowly, open a case, make a deal out of, picking up something, (They can not see inside the case), and pull out a rusty screwdriver.
Then ask, what is this? Get Screwdriver as a answer. Do the same with a hammer, and a big wrench. (get the name of that item)
Then with those three things, laying on the table, ask, “Is their one word, that can describe, all three things?”
And I get, ’tools’. Now I take out a ‘handgun’, lay it on the table, then ask: “Can this, handgun, also be described as being a, ’tool’”. Usually a pause, than a hand goes up, and the answer is, ‘Yes”.
Now go back to the screwdriver. “This is a screwdriver, If, is used it to, ’stab’ someone, could their be another name for it?” (While holding it in a, ’stabbing’, way), pause, one or two hands timidly go up in the air, and someone says, (In more of a question, than a answer) “ A weapon?” Then on the the hammer/wrench, same thing.
Now, I pick up the handgun. and say: “This is a handgun, it is used to punch holes in a piece of paper, it was bought new, and has done Nothing But, punch holes in a piece of paper, in fact it was designed to ONLY, punch holes in a piece of paper. But, it, ‘could’, be used for a different purpose, just like the hammer and screwdriver could, If that were so, then, and only then, it could be called by a different name, what would that name be”. And many hands go up, and they say, weapon.
“So, do you think, a ‘firearm’, is a tool, Unless it has been used, as a weapon?”
And the answer is a resounding, ‘Yes”.
To Cumbersome to bring in a ladder, Darino/Vanish, pool of water, or ‘ark’ a striped electric cord, which Each ONE of those alone, KILLS more people in accidents, than any firearm has ever done.
Then go on to show, the rest of the firearms, and ask/explain the actions, and sub actions, and how to recognize each one, by just looking at it, and to KNOW, how to safely UN-Load it.
But I guess, in a country, where one cannot have/carry, a ‘handgun’, If one carried a ’screwdriver’, walking down a dark street, late at night, in a dubious part of town, and a, ‘Bobbie’, stopped you. The answer would be: “Hey it’s ONLY, a Screwdriver”.
