Where is oil death?
08/21/16 at 20:39:53

A few months ago I took a a 600 mile trip to D.C. and doing highway speeds the whole way, at this time, I had no idea of the sidestand oil level check (which I use now). So before the trip, I decided to Change my oil, rotella triple protection. Did the change filled up to the top line at verticle. Rode down to a buddies house and decided to check it. Now it's way above the top line with the bike verticle, but there's still a bubble of air at the top of the window. At the time, I thought this was too much, so I drained a bit out so that the oil was 2/3 up between the marks. Rode the whole trip, kept an eye on the level and it stayed put at the same level.

My concern is that I always checked the oil hot, and oil has a thermal expansion. Could I really have been below the bottom line of I let the Bike cool off? Could I have put excessive wear on my engine?

How low does the oil level have to get to get rod knock, or ya know, kaboom?

Some people have set oil fill up to Juust be able to see it while it's on the sidestand. That's over full at vertical, but not enough to make it hit the crankshaft and air up the oil. You Can get by with that, but run it, shut off, and look at the oil ,, if it's foamy, it's over full.

What's too low?
Don't even try to find out..

Once you get some miles on the oil it will start slipping away.
I would change it when a good ride meant add oil.
I got about 300 miles on mine and used zero, but never trust it.
It doesn't take much to go from
Okay
To
Really? I need Oil?

Dang. I've just been using a 2 by 4 underneath the sidestand and I just about get to the bottom line. Enough for me, and I check it frequently anyways.

I can't believe how many people make it unnecessarily difficult to check the oil. It's easy to do it right with one person. This is how I keep the bike level while checking the sightglass.

I couldn't do that.. I wonder how much the oil does for cooling.

Why couldn't you do that? It puts me a good 1/8 inch above the top line cold standing straight up.

I thought a 2/4 had it closer to vertical,, if you are full, you're full.. I just grab the bar, pull it up, look at the window.

I seem to recall checking the oil by myself at the MSF class as a rank beginner. Grin They act like you need two people. Phaaa!!! Roll Eyes Wimps.

The two best ways for me is to

A. Sit on the seat and curl my head over to the side of the bike. Grin
B. Hold the very top center of the handlebar to balance the bike.

That video seems similar to what I sometimes do, but maybe with a little added twist.

Not a very good idea to rely on two people to check your oil. Then you wouldn't get it checked much. Undecided
