A clunk is normal,... if it has trouble going from neutral into 1st at a stop, try releasing the clutch lever and pulling it back in...
It'll snick right into place...

Thanks for the replies everybody. I must have a very low tolerance for first gear clunks. My Triumph does it also but not to the same extent :'(

Norm, Our trans are synchromesh, that means the gears need to be turning at nearly the same speed to engage. In any gear this happens because the gears on both trans shafts are moving, not so in neutral, the gears on the output shaft are stopped, makeing it harder, thus the clunk.Don't like the clunk ?stop the bike in gear, with the kill switch, fill, swing the kickstand up, hit the starter and go !

Batman,
That's what I do but I don't like loading up the starter.

With the clutch lever pulled in (while in gear), how does this harm the starter?

Kris,
I don't know about harming the starter but the load is greater on it when the bike is in gear because the starter has to rotate the clutch plates as well as the engine.

One of those 'will cause it to wear prematurely over the course of years' things and it is technically true.

THe only time I'm concerned with starting in neutral is when the oil is cold ,if your fueling up the bike has been run ,the oil is warm, and the bike should fire up pretty fast.the starter isn't working that hard, damage to the starter is more likely to happen from extend cranking-over heating.

I have a new 2016 and I get abnormal clunking from 2nd to 3rd. Bike has only 400 kms on clock so I'm hoping it will go away over time.

I find that shifting slowly between firs and second and also into 3rd works best. Our transmission doesn't like to be rushed.

I rip through gears, it's not clumsy or noisy.
The transmissions on the two I've ridden were identical in ease, quickness and generally quiet. It's as good as any and better than some.

In my experience with a cold engine, shifting slowly into 1st, it will grind. Once warmed up - no problem.

In my experience it goes into gear like butter when cold. When hot, I have to hold in the clutch to allow the gears to stop rotating.
But, if I stop the engine and then restart it makes a god/awful clunk. Like I said at the beginning of this discussion.---- Dam fi no. :'(

Record and Post the sounds it makes. Then compare it to a new S40 at a dealer.
You might need new clutch discs if they aren't breaking loose or a longer throw out rod. Sometimes even the throw out cam inside the clutch cover gets worn bent or broke. Check Barnett brand kevlar discs. I use them and they are silky smooth and grip tight.

There I fixed it for you. Its the opposite of syncromesh. Dunno about you fellas but over here we call non syncro gearbox a "crash box". Or like an old vw, has a "crash first" gear.
