We got the 2001 Drifter home safe and sound. Have been "undorking" it the last week and change. Remove fully engraved and painted windshield that does not mount upright, check. Remove the chrome "stingers" and luggage rack mounted way too high, check. Cut off the dreamcatchers, beads, feathers and rotten fringe, check. Remove the hand painted feathers, bears and pinstripes, work in progress. Swap out the beach bar for FL touring buck horns, check. Pull all the Kuryakn and Cobra chrome crap, get ignition switch where it belongs, polish up the proper period add ons, work in progress.
Got it running almost right, need to fix an exhaust leak.
Avon Venom X tires suck on retro bikes. Going to run Shinko 270 pie crust white walls. Straight out of 1938-58 tire molds.
The 01 sits a good 4" closer to the ground than the 99 does. Has a full gallon larger gas tank, electric gauge instead of cable driven. Same wheels and brakes. Needs to be blacked out, the 99-00 look much nicer than the chrome heavy 01-05 Drifter 1500s.
Someone paid near $11000 for that 01 brand new, and put close to that into customizing it. It came home for $3000, and making it look decent is nearly free. It will keep the pearl version of the stock paint colors, one of the few things the original builders did correctly.
Need to put pics on photobucket and con the wife into resizing them. Can't figure out how to do photos here on a smart (a$$) phone.
