Always done on a cold engine.

Back in the day, some cars listed both hot and cold clearance, as the mechanic would be driving the car into the shop and onto the lift.
Craziest was my '68 Opel Kadett. Valve clearance was listed/measured on the RUNNING engine. Factory tool to cover the cam sprocket so the oil wouldn't fly all over while adjusting the valves.

I'd think it would be hard to check a hot engine. You'd be constantly burning yourself on pretty much everything. That doesn't include the race to get it apart while it's still hot. Any engineer who designed one that way should be beaten with a stick.

How many 9 fingered mechanics worked on your Opel?  Grin

Valve clearance lessens on a hot engine, correct? We want 0.003-0.005" clearance, correct?

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Yes adjust them cold
I had a ford falcon six cylinder that you had to adjust the valves hot and running , what a challenge , very accurate to loose it clattered too tight you couldn't get your feeler gauge out
