The sound of 1200 RPM

Hi guys, I'm new here, and a new rider. I've been riding for about 6 months now on my Suzuki Boulevard S40 2007. I've already found this forum useful. I was stalling out at idle about every other ride. Took my bike in to a mechanic, $300 later, same problem. Replaced my petcock yesterday myself with a Raptor 660 with your instructions and so far so good. *fingers crossed*

While trying to figure out the solution to my problem before I found this forum I adjusted my idle speed. I know there's a video of a 1050 RPM idle speed, but I was wondering if someone has a 1200 RPM idle speed video (or would make one). That would be really helpful as I have no tachometer and think my bike likes a little higher RPM. Thanks!

Welcome! Don't go to a mechanic. I spent a few hundred bucks too after getting my bike, my first, a few years ago. The folks here are great and will walk you through anything.  I don't use a mechanic for anything except mounting new rubber on my rims after I uninstall the wheel and haul it to them (saves the install fee and they dont have my bike for a week).

Are you using the "fuel enrichment knob" (aka choke) to start it? It will sometimes die at idle without using the choke. It won't usually run well without it until it warms up.

Warm engine, level road,no throttle ,adjust idle screw so the bike does ten mph.got a 95 haven't got a tack ..20yrs.

@batman, sure you didn't mean 10kph?

Anyhoo, the Suzuki manual recommends warming up at 2000rpm by manipulating the choke, FFIW.

I have my bike set at what sounds like 1200 rpm compared to my gs500 which is running at 1200 rpm, therefore I consulted http://www.gearingcommander.com which suggest that the LS with standard gearing at 1200rpm should be traveling at 11kph or 6.8mph

I checked out the speeds that the bike should be running using gearing commander site at 5000rpm and 6500rpm because those numbers are listed in the Suzuki manual with all the speeds that it attains at those revs and gearingcommander was pretty accurate.

So if you have a gps to check your speed accurately then you should be able to coast along on a flat road at 11 kph or 6.8 mph and you'll be doing as near as dammit to 1200rpm

Thanks for all of your replies. I have it set now to what sounds a little faster than 1050 RPM and when I do the flat road test it looks like it's at about 8 mph. I don't have a precise speedo, just the standard one for 2007. I'll try tuning her a little lower and see how she does. The manual says anything between 1000 and 1200 works. Is that not accurate?

Why? Is there something bothering you ?  You're Seeing 8 mph, Why try for slower?

You Think it's a tick faster than 1,050,, good, why risk ruining the head by getting slower?

Over 1,000 rpm is good......it keeps an adequate amount of oil flowing to the camshaft/rockers at idle.  Drop the speed too low, and the cam bearings, cam and rockers can suffer.

Here is a video of my bike showing the new speedo/tach after I got it wired up.  The bike was not fully warmed up and was idling at about 1,000 rpm....it is a bit above that when fully warmed up.

Like others have said, it seems you are fretting needlessly about trying to keep your rpm down, when it doesn't really make sense. The point I was making by saying that Suzuki recommend holding the rpm at 2000 during a cold warm up was to show that even if it was idling at 1300 so what? What's the big deal.

@Dave, oooh you've got a tacho, I want some info, I see 'gps' on it as well, does it use gps to actually give you an accurate speed on the big dial? meaning does it do away with the connection to the engine? How much did it cost, and how difficult was it to fit.

My speedo is GPS, and it is from Speed Hut.  It displays total mileage, trip mileage, time, elevation, has 1/4 mile and 0-60 timers, and a clock.  It does take some adapting to mount it and make it waterproof.  I love it!

But, you're not rolling too fast in first.
High is better than low. Low is ruin. High is using the clutch rolling through a parking lot.. Big deal..

That's fair enough, and I don't know why Kris said that perhaps it just came out wrong. I think 1200 is a good setting because a bike takes about 20-30 minutes before it is warm enough to reliably set the idle speed. If you set it at 1000 after a 30 minute ride then you'll find that it too easily can cut out before the engine is at full operating temp so a few quick trips around your local neighbourhood can become a real PITA. Set it at 1200 when it is fully hot, and it will be idling at between 1000 and 1200 until it gets hot.

If you're worried about perhaps sitting in traffic on a hot day and you want you engine as cool as possible then the difference between 1050 and 1200 is negligible. If you're sitting at roadworks or in stationary traffic and you're going to be there for 10 minutes, turn your engine off.
