Engine/bike speed through the gears
06/29/16 at 05:55:30

Greetings.

I am looking for a chart with engine speeds in various gears. I have checked out http://www.gearingcommander.com but they only have an LS650 '87-94 which only lists 4 gears, rather than 5.

Also what engine speeds should I keep the bike under till I hit 1600kms, after which I presume that I can open her up a little more.

thx

Didn't you get an owners manual with the bike?  It most likely has the recommended speeds for the break in period.

Here is a 5 speed chart....in mph.

Breaking in,.. I'd keep it under 70mph... don't try for any 1/4 mile speed records,... and vary the throttle (try to avoid long steady cruising)...
Using some engine braking to slow the bike helps seat the rings, too...

OK thanks for the thread link, I searched but I did not find. Yes it does have the break in speed recommendations but it does not detail the rpm however after having a second look at it they have a recommended maximum rpm but I was wondering how they expected you to know seeing as it does not have a tacho, but I see now that their maximum rpm must correlate to their maximum suggested speed, that was not obvious to me at the time.

I've redone one of the charts in kph FFIW.

I never paid much attention to how fast I was going. I never really thought about what gear I was in, either. I just listen to the engine. If it sounds too fast, I change to a higher gear. If it sounds slow, like it's bogging down slightly, then I switch down a gear.   Wink

@RaleighGuy,

Yeah, I'm with you on that one, however after the bike is fully broken in, I'd like to almost redline it through the gears occasionally.

I am not sure how/why 6,500 rpm has been established as the redline rpm on the Savage.  Advertising shows that the maximum HP on a stock engine occurs at 5,400 rpm, and the maximum torque at 3,400 rpm - but where is 6,500 rpm documented as the Official Suzuki approved redline?

I'm certain that the fillings in my teeth would fall out at 6500 rpm.

I don't know what the redline is, but find the vibration above 5000 rpm obtrusive.

I've owned plenty of single cylinder four-stroke bikes that didn't have a tach, most of them told you well in advance when they were approaching redline by the vibration and loss of power due to valve float. The exception was my YZF250 would would happily rev beyond redline, except the electronics stopped the party.

My engine is not stock....and it easily revs up to 7,000 rpm in the lower gears and is still pulling - but I don't go there often and shifting to the next gear seems prudent.  It isn't vibrating horribly at those rpm....but full throttle acceleration is noisy and does shake the handlebars, mirrors and footpegs...and the engine is far smoother at 4,500 rpm and lower.

It could be the stock cam/head/piston just doesn't get enough air moving through the engine.

It is the maximum recommended engine speed in the owner's manual.

OK....my bikes have all been used....and didn't come with an owners manual.  (How are your supposed to know when you reach 6,500 rpm without a factory tachometer?)

You can get an owners manual in the tech section, find it in the index.

It's time to change gears when you feel the acceleration drop off. Redline schmedline, the
Get there Now
is changing gears and staying in the power that is accelerating you. It will tell you when to change gears.

I didn't know that the point of the throttle was to test the connecting rod. I thought it was to bring the engine to max power that translates into acceleration and then grab a gear. If Redlines are the goal you're going to be looking at brake lights.
