I had a Kawasaki 750 twin, it had buckhorns, I ditched them for some pretty straight bars. Much better handling. I have never seen anyone racing using ape hangers. I want Control. Looks don't mean hoot to me. Getting through a corner, through traffic, past a hazard, being able to make it hop from one lane to another with just a quick shove on the bars, that's what I call cool...

I sat on my bike, closed my eyes, put my hand to where they should be. Opened my eyes, figured where the handlebars wanted to be, got bars to fit. For me, an 10" mini-ape, with 1 1/4" chopped off each end. Very comfortable. Being comfortable means safer.

How tall an ape is 'safe' depends on the rider
Paladin describes what, to me, is the best way to select bars for a bike, but here's the question
will 12" apes put your hands above your shoulders? that'd be less controlable than below the shoulders, though I've seen some riders whao can ride like that
Oldfeller uses the stock buckhorns and he's hard to keep up with
I can't stay with him through curves at all

They are not the ideal handlebar when it becomes necessary to brake really hard, make evasive maneuvers, or need to hold on when you happen on some really rough riding (on or off road).

That's supposed to add extra grip right so the bars won't slip In the risers?

I think your concerns are legitimate. You can test your new bars to see if they will stay where you want them. If not, depending on skill level and tools, you can pin them in place. Future changes would leave you with a bit to deal with.

The felt helmet, meeh, you might be safer equipped with a fiberglass model, but, it does look cool as heck. And you and your friend could be sisters.

I'm just an ol guy, but I still have eyes.
The early complaint was about how she thought others might see her. I certainly didn't share in that.
Being a bit of a rebellious philosopher my position is simple..
Unless someone is willing to and able to Die for me when it is my time, nobody can tell me how to live. And I have worked to cleanse my mind of what I might think others MAY think.
