Gas Odor
05/09/16 at 12:56:30

Replaced stock petcock with Raptor on my rebuild and bike is now running fine...although: there is a noticeable odor of gas with the engine off, whether petcock is in ON or OFF position. There are no leaks, at least of the liquid variety and a sniff test on both sides of the carb doesn't reveal the culprit. It does seem to be coming from the gas cap...could this be a simple gasket issue? Bike only had a 8K miles when I bought it.

Are you sure the petcock to tank seal is not leaking?

Remove cap.
Lightly oil the ridge on the tank.
Lay a piece of glass on it.

Is it touching everywhere?

If not, plug it off with paper towels, rags, whatever. Put sandpaper on a flat piece of whatever, and work that surface flat.

I hadda do that. Mine leaked after a fillup.
Does yours?
You might be able to win by taking the cap apart and putting a shim in, pressing the rubber tighter. But, that's not exactly easy.
It takes a thin shim.

just to be sure... you plugged the vac port?

also, the cap is vented and gas can go thru the keyway too.

On my little 250 Ninja....the fuel tank sounds like a Tea Kettle when you park the bike in the sun!  (This isn't my bike - but mine sounds just the same).

First...yep, vac port is plugged.

2nd...will check the seal and sand if necessary.

3rd...it is warm and it just might be vapor leaking from the keyway.

Thanks all!!

another thing... don't fill above the bottom of the fill tube.
even then waves will hit it will blast out the vents and keyways.
filling it that high just makes it more likely to happen.

When you installed the Raptor...did you reuse the washers on the bolts?  Those washers have rubber seals on them to keep the fuel from leaking out around the bolts.

Mine always smelled like gas on warm days, once i made sure there were no leaks, I remembered that the tank vents to atmosphere and stopped worrying about it

while were on the subject be aware that drinking milk is good for your bike,if you finish a gallon save the plastic jug,cut yourself a nice washer the size of the rubber gasket on your gas cap ,place it between the rubber and the cap ,perfect thin shim.Nice to fully gas up and not see it running down the tank heading for your privates.
