Lancer,

The factory muffler on all of my Gold Stars was a tapered muffler shaped like a reverse cone muffler with a pea shooter end like the Triumph mufflers.

I don't have a working scanner at the moment or I would post a picture.

The best after market mufflers in that era of time were Dunstall mufflers.

The Dunstall sounded good but was probably in the 100 decibel  range.

Yep the D's were a nice muffler, but for a hard core Goldstar taken straight from the track, I sure did like that open R-cone.
The sound was just awesome !

Lancer,

Reverse cones were always the best looking mufflers.

The Dunstall mufflers made for a BMW made the BMW sound awesome. We never think of a BMW as sounding good, but with the Dunstall mufflers they made more noise when leaving up on the gas than they did with full throttle.

I had a BMW one season owned by Butler & Smith and I loved the sound of it, but it wasn't very fast though.

On the track I usually had a reverse cone about like the muffler you describe on your Gold Star.

I would like to have an up swept reverse cone muffler on my S40 that would look like the Norton exhaust.

That Norton is no good, it has an electric starter.

WTF

They must have built a few of them for gurls.

This is a really close example of the size/shape of the R-C megaphone I had.
The first one in the photo; short with a wider opening in back.
I believe my header had a 1.5" ID and was about 30-32" long.

Lancer,

I think the half mile racers almost always used that muffler and header.

I know they had a distinct sound. Usually you would get to hear Richard Mann because he would be in front of everyone else. Who in the h3ll decided that Dlck was a bad word?

The Norton that I used in Steeple Chase for one summer had a crossover 2 into 1 exhaust pipe with a  megaphone, like the one standing up on the left. That was one of the fastest Nortons that I have ever ridden.

A lot of exhaust and intake tuning was attempted in those days but never tested on a dynamometer, which were far and few between. If you were leading the pack you had a good tuner.

Yep, that is the same one I had...standing on the left.
The way I heard was that the tuners back then, the really good ones, tuned the engine by the sound it made when running on the track, and by the smell of it...they could tell if it was running lean or rich and whether it was in the low,mid or high range.
I would give a lot to spend some time with someone like that.

Lancer, There were some really good old time tuners.

My fiend Marion Cameron was hard of hearing, but if he rode behind me going up hill he could tell me what jetting I need. And then the son of gun would pass me like a bat out of h!ll going down the next hill.

The old guys didn't have dynos or oxygen sensors and most of the carburetors were pretty lousy.

My friend Enos Hoffer could tune a 1960 Sportster to run 1/4 mile times that are still standing over a half century later. Enos just passed away a couple of weeks ago. I am pretty sure the only job he ever had, besides the Army, was at Lancaster Harley Davidson in Lancaster, PA.

Eddie Fisher who had the AMA #1 Tag back in the late fifties opened up a home in Shunk, PA for the old motorcycle guys to finish out there last years.

Remember the hillbilly song "Where have all our heros gone?"

I get tears in my eyes thinking about all the really good motorcyclists that I have known.

Justin,

Did you know Eddie?

Watching him win at Laconia, where he sewed up the points for the Number 1 Tag, was something one can never forget.

He was a prince of a guy. His son Gary was briefly mentioned in the movie On Any Sunday.

I only knew Of him,but when I hear about the selflessness of someone, it matters. I'm glad you posted that. Pretty much the high point of my day, save for sitting on the porch, watching birds on the feeder. They Do love some black sunflahr seeds.

Justin,

My Friend Marion Cameron was one the guys that went to Eddie's place to finish out the ride. I regret never having taken the time to go see who all was staying there.

I am not without regrets.

We all have regrets of assorted types, and many are pretty close to home, if not in the home.
