Mostly normal. The belt tends to wander around the pulley.

It's time for a new belt,when the old one is punched full of holes or broken. If it's so full of holes that I am Afraid to goose it ,then it's done.

if you haven't already, you need to read up on aligning the rear pulley and setting the belt tension at the same time. that should stop or minimize future wear.

They are harmless.

Very few belts have actually broken.
I had one break at .. hmmm.. about 70,000 miles?  I would have to see if I wrote it down somewhere.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

Your rear pulley might be getting a bit too much "wobble" if the bearing in the pulley hub is getting worn.  Grab the pulley with both hands....one on the front side and the other on the rear....and see if you can wobble/rock the pulley (not rotate....but wobble at an angle).  If so......the bearing is getting worn and is allowing the belt tension to pull the rear pulley forward at an angle.

The "cheap" fix is the rubber floor mat repair.  (A more complete repair would include a new bearing in the pulley hub, and the rubber floor mat).

I put a new set of the rubber absorbers in there and the wobble is gone. The old ones were very, very worn... deep grooves. I also spent a good deal of time giving the belt a good scrubbing and lining it up. I haven't taken it out for long ride yet as the rain started just after I got it all back together. Thanks for the guidance on the belt. I was pretty sure I was out $200.

I still think you should do the pulley test.....and see if it wobbles.  The fact that your rubber parts had grooves in them is an indication the bearing is allowing too much movement.

A new bearing and the rubber floor pads.....and I betcha the belt will no longer rub on the sides.

Hey Dave, is the bearing you're referring to the main bearing pressed into the rear hub?  I figger that needs the right knowledge, experience and tools to replace, no?

The bearing is in the pulley hub, and it has a rubber seal on the outside.  It doesn't need anything fancy to replace - but it is nearly impossible to get the rubber seal out without damaging it.  I take a big screwdriver and pry out the seal, then if you don't have a press you just use a big hammer and a bang the bearing out.  When you put the bearing back in I always put the bearing in a baggie and place it in the freezer to make it as small as possible, and I warm the aluminum hub with a hair dryer, of in the oven to about 200 degrees.  Then the bearing goes back in much easier.  When it all cools again you can then put a new rubber seal in.

The bearing from Suzuki is a bit expensive - if you take the bearing to an auto store or bearing wholesaler.....they are pretty cheap.
