Loud Noise from engine after oil plug replacement
04/05/16 at 16:50:10

So I got the head plug installed and the headcover with no broken bolts. I made sure the engine was at TDC, filled it up with gas and oil and started her up. At first it was running great then I noticed it. Oil was flowing out of the intake timing cover. Did i do something wrong or is it just that the rubber seal is no longer any good?

Maybe you allowed dirt to get under it.
Maybe it's not sitting in the groove right.
Kinda hafta Do something to mess those up.
Maybe while it was off the bike, it got damaged.
Whatever it Is, you're gonna have to get it off and look at it.

Yeah I thought that was probably the case...I just hate having to remove the tank etc to get good clearance.

Yeah,, we all know what a thrill that is. Jj the jetplane, a gal in Georgia, I think, called and was stuck on the road. I told her to get the tank off, check connections. She put the phone down and had the seat and tank off in about five minutes. She's currently, Hopefully, winning a bitter conflict with the clutch not being willing to transmit torque...
Having a good place to park the tank before pulling it is a great plan.
I wouldn't start with tightening the bolts. I'd be doing a visual on the o ring and mating surface. Fingertips are good, too.
Just don't drag junk into the engine.

Problems like this are usually self induced and avoidable by slowing down and being Aware that the seal can be dislodged from its groove, or a piece of grit,
I'm always cleaning edges and anything that could
Donate
crud into the mating surfaces during disassembly.
Before a wrench goes on, I'm cleaning if parts are coming off.

Ok so I checked the covers and for some reason the screws were really lose...I probably didn't tighten those down in my race to get it on the road again. However, I took her out for a short spin about 2-3 miles and on my way back the last quarter mile in 2nd gear i heard a hefty clank in the engine kinda like clank whine whine whine. I popped it into neutral and glided over to see what the problem might be. The whine slowly stopped and I was able to ride it back to the house with no issue. I'm not seeing any leaks or anything. But it sure scared the crap outta me because I've never heard the bike do that before. Any ideas?

I checked the oil level to make sure I wasn't low or anything and I actually think I over filled it.....could that of caused the engine to slip or something?

Well , how Much did you overfill it?
These engines are really pretty forgiving.
Some people have filled them up enough to See the oil in the BOTTOM of the window sitting on the sidestand.

The oil is well over the fill line when the bike is level. You can't see the oil if it's on the sidestand.

The clank I heard was loud enough to scare the hell out of me. I thought something had punched through the engine but after sitting at neutral for a few minutes it was like nothing happened. After the clank it's like something inside of the engine was still spinning. When that spinning noise went away it drove the rest of the way home in first with no problem.

It's a 2001 and only has 9k (yep you read that right) miles on it. The 2 owners never used it really. I've not checked the camchain tensioner.

Did you change the oil filter?
They Can be installed backwards. Bad things happen then.

No I didn't change the filter this time around.  Just dumped the oil to fix the headplug.

I guess all you can do is
Be easy on it, and stay close to home a while.
At 9k, cam chain tensioner Should be okay.

Yeah I guess so. I'm going to drain some of the oil so it is between the lines and give her another short ride and take it easy. I'll stay close to home in the instance something "bad" happens. Thanks JoG2!
