Where will it stop?

If there's ever a question on this forum where we could get a high level of agreement, it's probably this one. I think most of us know the answer:        it won't.

From what I've read,.. they've already done it 70 times...
Now, they suddenly grow a spine?...  Nope...  They just don't bad PR....
Apple is not my favorite company...   Huh

I lean towards the national security in this case...
I wouldn't want to see it allowed in all criminal cases, but... national security must have some weight...
Maybe not allow it as admissible in court, but just be allowed for investigative purposes... i.e.,.. finding terrorist associates...

JMHO... and it goes against my core principals...  Undecided

just listen to show on this and learned a few things. what the FBI wants is for Apple to write software and install only on this phone that disables the feature that prevents more than 10 guesses at the password. the fbi wants to be able to guess a million times if necessary until they get the right one and get in.
The other issue is this phone is not "owned" by the dead guy but by his employer.
Finally, the dead guy turned off the cloud backup feature a month or so before the shooting which is why the company (the owner) cant get the info.

not sure if those facts change anyone's mind or not.

As an FYI :   Back in the olden days before cell phones, personal computers, the internet, and rampant political correctness. If the FBI wanted to "tap" a phone or obtain call records they needed to obtain a detailed warrant from a federal court and serve it to the Telephone Company Legal who then hand carried the information down the chain to the technician who would actually perform the circuit work, or print out the past bills.        Every one involved on the corporate side was obligated to silence subject to termination and legal prosecution.         That was in the "mechanical" age. Today's digital age .... Well.... A few keystrokes and your personal information and privacy are toast......

It is really hard for me to believe this is not just a circus side show.  First, they have already given access to various alphabet agencies.  Second, all that information from a smart telephone is going to go through multiple servers.    I would suspect it shouldn't be to hard to find nearly all the information they may be interested in.

Best regards,

BINGO ! The Feds  don't actually give a crap about what's on this particular phone. They want the KEY to everything. The FBI seems to be winning the PR fight on this one by a slim but not insignificant margin. Next time it will be easier. An the next time and the time after that .....

"National security" greases a lot of skids.

My time in Military Intelligence, especially at the counter-terrorism desk at DIA, was a wake up  call of how many people in the world hate us- either on religious, ethnic, or historical post US "interventions" basis.  It may seem unfair, but after we have bombed out villages, defoliated jungles and raised cancer etc rates all over the  world, some people take exception to our behavior.  That being said, if you are charged with trying to protect the US, you would like every tool available to save your friends, family and neighbors.  It is a powerful motivator to ignore boundaries legal or illegal.  Personally, I am against the governments' understandable desire to know everything about everyone because, SOMEONE will use that information for political or financial gain rather than what we would agree to have the info used.
