Petcock/ Fuel supply
12/05/15 at 13:56:45

  Hi everyone,

I am new here. I recently picked up a 2003 Savage with about 4600 miles. I have changed the bars to Ryca's "Superbike" bars, drilled the idle mixture screw and opened it about 3/4 turn.

The current problem is the bike won't run with the petcock in the "on" position, but it will run on "reserve". (I have already ordered a Raptor 660 petcock, but it's not here yet.

I am still getting backfiring on shutdown, but throttle response has improved greatly.

Should I expect the Raptor petcock to solve the fuel supply issue?

Thanks. This forum has been immensely helpful as I get to know this bike.

"Prime" position allows fuel to flow without needing engine vacuum.
"On" and "Reserve" function identically,...only difference is the length of the pick-up tube.
Both need engine vacuum...

A backfire on shut-down is pretty normal for this bike... it's just the hot pipe blowing off the last cylinder cycle of fuel...
It's yer' bike sayin' g'night... Cool...

Raptor is a wise move...

Like 'bot said, the reserve inlet of the petcock sits lower than the on inlet. That way when your fuel level drops below the on inlet, the engine will sputter. It's a very low tech way of saying "hey dummy, you need gas". When you switch to reserve, it does the exact same thing as on except you are now feeding the carb from a lower point, that's all.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!
