Removing drive pully with no rear brake

This is my second post on this forum today and ever! New member (yes, I made a donation) and owner of an '03 Savage that I'm converting to a Ryca CS-1.

I've gotten myself into a situation I'm not sure how to get out of. I've stripped the bike down to frame and engine. Now I've decided to remove the drive pully (for the belt) from the transmission. Trouble is the rear hub is off (heck, everything is off) and I can't keep the drive pully from turning when I try to unscrew the nut (yes, I flattened the lock washer per Clymer). Normally, you'd have an assistant apply the rear brake...

I tried to bind the belt but only succeeded in ruining the belt. The bike is in neutrual, of course. Is the trick to put it in gear, or would that put to much strain on the tranny? Not sure I can even put it in gear since I've already removed the shift linkage.

Any great ideas out there?

I was very careful unscrewing the nut though. Go slow and easy and it should work ok. Don't force it.

I put the bike into 1st gear, attached the belt to the front pulley, had my 130 pound son stand on the folded belt to the rear, and hit it with my trusty IR-231 Impact Wrench. I've yet to find a nut that the 231 can't remove.

Varslagen1, I'm having difficulty picturing your suggestion. I get the part about putting a socket between the pully and the belt. Are you saying it will stop rotating with the socket gets to the transmission case, or (assuming the engine is on a bench or the floor) when it hits the supporting surface?

Don't get a cheap one from harbor freight or home depot...they just don't work. Spend the extra $20-$30 and get a good one. The Ingersoll-Rand 231C can be purchased on Amazon for just $110. I think I paid less then that at the local Tractor Supply. It's the industry standard impact wrench.

Any impact wrench likes air...lots of air. A compressor with 11+ CFM (at working psi) is really a minimum.

I bought a Craftsman electric impact wrench at a yard sale for $45......and for most things I now just leave my air impact in the tool box and use the electric one. It is much faster as I don't have to wait for an air compressor to pump up adequate pressure.

I never let the air out of my compressor (I paid for it after all). I just drain the water out once a month. As soon as the water is done coming out I close up the drain. I also have real drops in several locations in my garage which makes the use of air tools very convenient.
