Lower end noise!
08/02/15 at 14:37:09

Need advice!

My 1999 savage is making an odd noise!

When the bike is off and I roll into my garage for storage it sounds like something is in the front belt pulley.

I took off the cover and did not find any obstructions.

The sound is more pronounced when rolling forward than backwards.

It sounds like a rhythmic thud!

any ideas?

I get the same sound backing up rather than going forward. I think it's normal. It doesn't happen all the time (to me). I think it's just how the belt teeth wear.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Thank you for the quick response!

The large pully nut has a larger washer crimped into one of the flats of nut - could it still become loose when configured that way?

Could you provide too me where I can find additional information about the splines.

Thank you!

take a sharpie and make a mark across the lockwasher to the pulley.
put the bike in gear and 'rock' it forward.
take a look at the mark.
repeat going backwards.

should be no movement.

Oh boy!

The pulley has slight movement in relation to the nut and shaft!

Do I have a major problem?

If I need to tighten the nut I will need to but a socket!

Thank you!

Well - my heart is pounding and I am not very happy.  I have never ridden the bike hard!

The bike has 10500 miles but I was not the only owner.

If I understand the previous posts it appears I am not the firs to encounter this and some have used RTV/JB weld and tighten the nut good and tight!

I personally don't like that kind of fix but the option doing the repair correctly at this time is cost prohibitive.

I guess one of my options is to part out the bike or sell whole for parts Sad

Don't Panic.
Try to tighten the nut and see if it helps. Yes, you'll need to buy a socket. If you want to be riding old motorbikes you might as well fork out for a good and comprehensive tool kit. It'll save you a lot of grief and money in the long run. If you need to replace the pulley, there seems to always be plenty of Savages being parting out.
Good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I thought the pulley would have been engineered to fail first for ease of replacement!

I will attempt to tighten the nut once I locate a socket large enough for the task.

Again Thanks!

You should update your information to show where you live.....there might be a member near you with a socket and willingness to come help out a "brother". Wink
