Fuel leak driving me crazy ??
06/04/15 at 07:22:07

I've got a leak from somewhere near the carburetor. It's a really slow leak and seems to be coming from the pod filter I installed. Is there any possibility that the float level is adjusted too high causing too much fuel into the carb ? I've checked the petcock and it has been changed and seems to be working good. No leak from the hose that goes from the petcock to the carb. I've opened the carb and change the bowl gasket to make sure. It's still leaking. I've adjusted the float level by bending a little bit the tiny metal plate that holds the spring so that the measurements should be to spec according to the clymer. I'm lost. I hooked everything up and waited like 20 minutes and didn't see any leak. I've left my bike overnight with a scott towel underneath the carb only to see a big spot of fuel on it...

If your carb has the drain screw and small nipple on it, you can check the fuel level by placing a piece of transparent hose on the nipple, and opening the drain screw a turn.  The fuel will flow into the tube and you can hold it up to the carb and it will show the level....it should be just about the same level as the heads of the screws holding the float bowl on.

It's a 1998, it doesn't have the drain valve, it would be so much easier...

I had to do the float level measurement from the lip to the top of the float and it's set at 1.06"... I might have done something wrong I don't know...

It could be that the needle/seat in the carb is not sealing completely, of the O-ring that seals the seat to the carb body is leaking.  Even though you shut off the fuel flow, there is still fuel in the hose that can flow past the needle and seat.

Try this.....When I am coming home at the end of my ride, I shut the fuel petcock off as I go through the intersection about a mile form my house.  It is just enough fuel that I make it to my driveway before the bike stops, and I then just coast down my drive and my bike is parked with almost no fuel in the carb.

Try shutting your fuel off before you get home and run the carb dry before you park the bike.

In your spare time you might consider looking for a bowl with the drain.

Yeah, I usually leave the petcock open... I should close it all time.

And as for the bowl with a drain, it's also a good idea.

I didn't change the o-rings inside. Maybe that could be a second solution.

I'm wondering, what's the little o-ring for, in that picture ? I don't see any o-ring on the needle itself, there's just an o-ring on the valve with the screen thingy...

I think the little o-ring is for the pilot screw.

See the brass piece in the kit....the seat assembly for the needle?  That has an o-ring on it, and they can decompose over time and leak.  If you bough the kit and put in the new seat, then it has a new o-ring on it.

And yes, you should shut the fuel off at the end of every ride (not necessarily at every stop).

I just bought a new gasket, not a full rebuild kit. This could be my problem.

I will take it all appart to change the o-ring...

My gas leak seems to bother my wife more than it does me..

I really dont think a new O-ring is gonna help me out..

JOG2 : I seriously doubt if your "gas leak" is the only thing about you that bothers her....
P.S. Give the poor Lady our condolences.
