Is there a person weight limit where you would advise (or want to advise) the person they are too heavy for the S40, and that they need a bigger bike?

My owners manual (page 32) lists the GVWR for the S40 as 785 pounds.

Dry weight is listed as 352 pounds.

Using Verslagen's estimate of 50 pounds for the fluids, wet weight is 402.

785 - 402 gives a load capacity of 383 pounds.

I think 50 pounds might be a little high for the fluids. 30 is probably closer, which makes the wet weight 382.

785 - 382 is a load capacity of 403 pounds.

I'd probably split the difference between those two number to be safe.

For you I'd definitely recommend upgrading the shocks.
Check out s'bots bike. I think he has intruder shocks about 11.5"
The savage shocks are about 10.5" and only have 1.5" travel.
longer shocks, more travel is what you want.

I got that quote from a Heavy and Dam heavy site. Hense larger capacities required.

Sorry Dave. I see that that 50 lb # came from Versy, not you. Probably true of some of the larger cruisers. I was still workin' on my first cup of coffee this morning when I read the post.

A lot of mfrs. list a "ready to ride" or "in riding order" weight rather than a "wet weight"
I wonder if that includes the weight of the "entire" battery. I don't know if all new bikes are shipped with the battery installed, but one of the salesman at a big dealership near me told me once that none of the bikes in their showroom have batteries in them. Makes sense. Some of those bike sit on the floor for a long time, particularly during the winter.

Oh definitely. trying to get the extra hours put in at work to spend the money on them. There are a few bumps\dips in my normal commute that knock the air out of me and cause me to lose eyesight at the moment of impact Lol. Is there a way to upgrade the front springs too?

The cheap way to stiffen the front a little,.. is to add about 1/2" thick spacer to the top of the fork springs...(that's about all I had the strength to squish in there and still get the caps back on)...

Secondly,... I do have 12" Intruder 800 shocks, but although they are taller, they are quite soft...
If the one's you got were the same, I think you'd bottom out even easier...
You might try some 11.5 to 12.5" Harley shocks (be aware many are over 13" and they would be too big)... (and you would have to sleeve the mount holes)...
Not sure if the 1400 Intruder uses a stiffer shock or not...

I'll try and remember (crs alert) to look it up. You might look in the tech section at the "Fork Improvements for RYCA Café Conversions" for some insight.

I bought a brand new S40 a while back. I thought I would stick with OEM stuff so I got Suzuki saddle bag supports and saddle bags. One day I could hear an odd noise that would increase wih RPM.

After checking everything I noticed my belt guard was bent and slightly rubbing the rear pully, removed it, fixed it and carried on. A few days later the same thing.

The saddle bag support was slamming into the belt guard! I only weigh 150 pounds. I do drive a lot on back roads and goat trails in the mountains ect. but I do it slowly just plonking along.

A fellow does need more rear shock travel.
