lag after opening up throttle
06/01/15 at 14:42:30

I have an 01 savage 26,000 miles jardine slip on. I have a question about the throttle response on my bike. It seems to be mostly in 3rd and 4th gear. Whenever I crack the throttle wide open to pass or catch up if I'm behind the group it seems to lag for about 3 seconds than i feel the power kick in. I can't tell if its revving up than grabbing or if its just lagging to take off. It almost seems like the clutch slips for a second but i cant tell. Other than that the bike shifts and runs great! I just got this bike a couple months ago and i love it. Thanks

I'd rather have some peace of mind in the cam chain area first.

If I hammer it in 4th or 5th it takes a bit for the engine to react, but if I just roll it on, "no problem".  It must be something to do with the fact that it has a carburetor, because all my bikes acted the same and all had carbs...

Ya i probably should. I can see RTV around the side covers and case so I'm pretty sure somebody's been into there before but i don't know what they did.

I would not want to start it again till I knew that the tensioner was not about to spit its guts.

Have you changed the oil, and if so, which oil did you use?
Some oils can reduce the friction between the clutch plates resulting in symptoms similar to what you describe.

Also, having a CV carb fitted as standard, isn't going to win any prizes for throttle response.

As Justin said, if the bike is new to you, order a clutch-side gasket just in case, but take the cover off and check the state of the cam belt tensioner. This is important.

Also, as old.Indian said, steadily open the throttle rather than whacking it open works best. It's a big single cylinder with a CV carb.

Hope this helps  Smiley

I changed the oil and filter 2 months ago when i got it. used K&N filter and valvoline 10w40 4 stroke motorcycle oil (comes in black bottle). I will check the cam tensioner soon. I'm riding the bike everyday right now. I just rode in a run for a blessing with a bunch bike HD's and Hondas and they couldn't believe the sound my bike made with that jardine pipe on it. I made a few HD's sound liek sewing machines haha  Grin

Has the carb been re-jetted to suit the exhaust and air filter swaps?
