Cam Chain - tensioner and assy.
05/26/15 at 04:05:00

I had a look inside and found this. Before I change the parts, I was hoping to get some pointers as to why this might have happened. Anybody got any ideas?

How many miles?
Did you get it like that?
Did you get the spring or did parts get loose?
That's the problem we try to keep people from having.
The young fellow, thread about
Only tops out at 60
Or something,  took a while but he finally believed us.
You got lucky, that is usually an engine fatality.
Well, maybe the jury is still out on that.

I went to some of your other posts and found out your bike has 32,000 kilometers......20,000 miles.  Most likely your cam chain stretched enough that the tensioner was completely extended and and it just came apart.

You need to get the Verslagen......or get another tensionr and make one of your own (or replaced the cam chain with a new one).

If you can get a stock one there,.. you can have a machine shop do the verslagen mod...
It's just adding an extension with a second hole to the plunger (this will give you double the life for your chain)...
...and, adding the slot to the housing, and pinning the plunger into it.(this will make it impossible for the plunger to fall out again)...

If that's all the damage,.. you are lucky... We have seen then come loose and blow out the case..

Anybody here,.. going to Ireland any time soon?... Undecided...

Alright, so say if I wanted to pursue this verslavy mod, is there a way to determine how bad the cam chain is stretched. Thinking if my chain is too far stretched and I have to change it either way.

Yep.....it was in one of those links I provided for you to read.

verslagen1 wrote on 01/24/10 at 22:48:58:
Couldn't find the detailed sketch I know is in the SSM.
This picture shows new on top and a used chain on the bottom.
And he's measuring the stretch over about 14", not the required 21 pin measurement.
So, stretch out the chain like shown, and it would be good to stretch it a bit.  One end on a nail, the other with a bungee cord, weight, whatever.  count off 21 pins, measure from center to center, but left edge of the pin to left edge is the same.
127mm or 5" is brand new.
service limit is 128.9mm or 5.075"
While you got it in your hand, check for any stiff links.
I'd replace it if you have any.

If I had it out id replace it noW
OR
Slap a Verslavy in, run it, and when it's time for a chain, slap a cam in,
Or do it now, you're all apart,, and check out the guides..

Jeezus, look how that plunger is popped out but wedged in the edge of the hole ! So lucky it just bashed out a recess in the plunger housing instead  of flicking all the way out. And it ran like that. Another bullet dodged.

Thanks for all the inputs. I've ordered the stock parts(chain tensioner plunger), figured since I've got it all open I might as well just change it out.

Again thanks!
