Old_rider's bow-wood from the M&M Ranch

Oldrider sez he wants to make a bow. Well, he's running out of reasons to procastinate. Here's Mike (MMRanch) holding a couple baby bows we whacked out of his woods. Ain't that wood purty?! We braved rain, lightning, mud, cow flops, all manner of hazards. Now, how we gonna get it to him?

ROFL! I did not even see this post! I was searching old posts by Dave for lights and ran across this.
MMR why did you not mention this at the dragon run? I am still looking for a draw knife down here at all the antique shops and craigslist.
Has anyone set up a workshop for bows yet?
I love wood working and the thought of making a longbow out of a piece of tree makes me giddy.
I know it will take me a while but I am if anything a perfectionist when it come to quality of workmanship ( I will NOT fail).
How long must I wait for the wood to season? Most experts say 2 years... I don't want to wait that long!

Have some straight pieces that have been down and curing for about a year.
Can buy brand new draw knives locally.
Whenever you guys decide to have a bow class is fine. Still have a couple dozen of those trees to remove.
And no town job to get in the way... unlike the last get together we had here.

You can rough out the shape using a sharp hachet or my favorite a roofing ax. Get a goodly chunk of pine log to use as a base to chop against and strip the bark off with short strokes. Keeping the outer sap wood is important for proper bow flex I've been told. If you can't find a good draw knife use a sharp block plane for the shaping. It might take a little longer with the plane but it is easier than using a draw knife unless you have a dunder head. I've been a woodworker for years and have made a few short bows in my time. Nothing like a good piece of Osage Orange for bow stock
