I read someplace that an 883 motor weighs about 180. Someone on here said that a savage motor is around 100.
a savage holds a little over 2 quarts of oil - a bit less than 4 pounds. 883 holds almost 5 between the motor and the primary - twice as much ,say around 8 pounds
savage holds 2.8 gallons of gas - about 16 pounds for a full tank 883 either 4.5 or 3.5 depending on the model - 26 or 21 pounds
So 9 or 14 more pounds just in fluids depending on the model.
Everything on the HD is heavier by some varying amount. Frame, fenders, seat, wheels, suspension, etc
It doesn't take a huge difference in the weight of any one part for the incremental differences to add up.
Besides, the engineering, and marketing, philosophy of HD and the Asian mfrs. is completely different. Harley has never been concerned with weight. It just isn't an important parameter with regard to to how the motorcycles function, either to the company management or to most of it's customers.
Just because a Sportster is a heavy bike doesn't automatically make it a bad one. Harley's are different. A lot of folks must think that's ok, or Harley wouldn't sell so many of them. And there wouldn't be so many bikes by other mfrs that are pretty transparent Sportster imitations.
