Belt Drive Guard Issue?
04/26/15 at 18:37:24
I hit a pothole today pretty hard and then there was a scraping noise at the rear tire, so I stopped. The guard over the belt drive was scraping the metal belt gear on one side. I couldn't figure out how it got bent sideways but I tried to bend it back with pliers. No luck. After a while I thought maybe it was originally in a higher position, and that the rear wheel got pushed upward so that the metal belt gear got pushed up into the belt guard so that it engaged with it and pulled it down when it returned to normal position. So I pulled up on the belt guard and it made a popping noise and went up into a higher position so that it was no longer engaged with the metal belt gear. Then I was able to drive about 50 miles with no issues.
Firstly, did I get it right?
Secondly, do I need to get someone who knows what they are doing to look it over, or should I feel confident that everything is fine?

As long as it doesn't rub, I wouldn't worry about it. I'd check it though to make sure it doesn't happen again.

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

if it moved, and you popped it back into position...
you're missing a few bolts.

The upper belt guard is mounted in 3 spots
1. Bottom bolt of rear shock
2. Midway of the belt cover mounted to the rear swing arm
3. Behind the sprocket guard
Make sure all 3 mounts are secure and keep the rubber side down 😉

It happened. You haven't done anything but move a piece that Clearly is not secured. Dude, that sounds So Uncool. You gotta figure that out and get it secured.

The bracket near the rear shock can break but will still sort of clamp, I think there should be a full hole in the belt guard at this point, not a half round.

I had a problem with the saddlebag supports hitting the belt guard and bending it against the rear pulley. Had to take it off to straighten it the put longer shocks on to keep it from happening again.
