Igniter/ CDI Question
04/22/15 at 20:39:50

Hey everyone, I have a question about the CDI Box.  My bike hasn't been running that great.  I had someone look at it, and they said it's misfiring and could be the CDI Box.  I replaced the Ignition Coil a few months back, but it was a used one I got off ebay.
I looked on Bike Bandit, and if I'm correct then the "Igniter Assy" is $480?!?

I'm not able to make my own, so does anyone know of any places online to get one cheaper? I would rather get a new one, then used.

Analog,

You might want to learn how to test the electrical components before purchasing new ones. I am sure the procedure is in the Clymer Manual.

Does the engine start easily? How old is the battery? A weak battery will often contribute to misfiring. My Clymers manual says to let a Suzuki dealer test the ignitor. The Suzuki manual tells how to check it yourself and provides the resistance values, but also states that you may not get the same readings because your meter will probably not be calibrated the same as the factory meter.  Be sure your fuel is clean and fresh and if you have not replaced the vacuum petcock with a Raptor unit, you could actually have a fuel problem.

Have you been riding the bike.....or just started it up after a long winter nap?

The previous post about a funky battery is correct.....a low battery voltage can still allow the starter to function - but not provide enough voltage for a good spark.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
So, I have been riding the bike, a lot for a while.  The longest it has sat without riding is probably about a week.  I bought the bike in January.  After I bought the bike I checked the battery with a cell checker (All good) I suppose I could hook it up to the battery charger and see if it still has a full charge.
I replaced the ignition coil and spark plug back in January too. But the ignition coil was used.
I'm going to pull the spark plug when I get time tomorrow and see how dirty it is.  Maybe a new spark plug will help temporarily (like a band-aid)

The bike was running great, took it on some incredible rides, and had plenty chances to open up the throttle.  The BLVD has some balls!
But it's been slowly running worse and worse.
I'm still very new to motorcycles and motorcycle maintenance.
I thought it could have been the carb that needed adjustments because it started running really high RPM at higher speed.  I'd be in 5th around 50mph and feel like I need to shift up into the non existent 6th gear lol
And btw when I changed the oil I put in Shell Rotella T6

A side note.  When I first bought the bike it had an issue with the carb, I guess the main needle got stuck in the up position and bent.
A motorcycle mechanic took apart the carb, ran the needle through a lathe and straightened it out.  After that it was running cherry!

Oh and yes, the bike starts easily every time.

in 5th at 50 is not high rpm. not even 4400.  Try 75 in 4th, high, but you're still not red lining.

It feels like the RPMS are incredibly too high in 5th at 50. Like way higher then it should be.

Is your clutch slipping?  If you apply full throttle does the engine rpm increase without a corresponding change in speed of the bike?

The clutch isn't slipping, when i'm full throttle the rpms get crazy high, but the bike still increases in speed. But the rpm's get very high.
I changed the spark plug and that seemed to help a little bit

Rpm, at any given speed, is a fixed ratio for each gear...
It cannot change, unless your clutch is slipping...
If your clutch is slipping, it will slip in all gears...

Ignition/CDI has nothing to do with it...

I don't shift into 5th gear until 50mph... 5th is lugging at 40mph...

Check that your clutch cable isn't frayed, kinked, or sticking...

Where do you live?  (If you place your location in your personal information it helps to locate other riders near you).

You need to have someone in the area who has a Savage meet with you and see if your bike is working properly.  Let them ride your bike and see if the clutch is slipping or not....and if the rpm is where it should be.

Sorry everyone! I haven't been on in a while, appreciate the help!
I live in Maui, Hawaii.  If there is anyone out here on this rock on the forum, I'd love to link up!
So after changing the spark plug, it seemed to ride way better.
I think some of what I thought was RPM's was a really really loud rattling speedometer. (I know, I'm a noob)
But over all, the bike has been running good lately.  Its still misfiring a little though.
I put some tape along the rim of the speedometer and that helped with the rattle.  I realized it when I was on a short ride without a helmet (usually I wear a full face) I heard it and put my hand ontop the speedometer, and it went away.
I gotta do some research and figure out a permenant  fix.
