cam chain already?
03/29/15 at 11:32:48

Could I already be needing work on my cam chain? I don't hear anything but I've got a VERY LOUD short muffler on there. I have a couple of friends who say they hear my cam chain rattling. I've got a 2003 savage with just a little over 5000 miles on it. Got it for a steal from a guy who got it for his old lady that didn't like to ride. 1 owner with all the regular maintenance for 1500.00. Is it possible I need to service my cam chain already?

if your muffler is that loud... it's probably their fillings.   Grin
but new2u bike... I'd look at it.  5k is not unheard of.
if you can feel tapping at the top of the clutch cover next to the oil filter, it's time.

It's time to look at the valves. Check and adjust, then see if the chain is okay. One thing is certain, the chain tensioner is a fatality.

I'll try that once the engine cools verslagen. Need 1 of your versys I keep reading so much about but I see you're on a vacation til may Undecided. Thanks for the input guys. Valves and the cam are about the only thing I'm scared to mess with myself as they appear to be very touchy and can tear the engine up if not done just right. Also the most expensive job at the stealership too Sad

I also, was very wary, about doing Valves myself,
on this ICE.
Done other, ICE's, but not this one.

First time,  slow, read, re-read, check, re-check.
It worked out.
Next time, it was faster.

IN Time, it will be down to a ONE Amber Fluid Job !

The Cam Chain adjuster, Piece of cake.
Just take and print off a photo, from some 'exploded' view.
Tape that photo to a piece of cardboard.
And put the bolts you take off,
in a hole you punched in that photo/cardboard.
And  Have a new gasket on hand.

So, jump in, go for it!
The more you learn, the more you know.
