Headlight options
03/07/15 at 10:40:18

I would like to replace my stock headlight with a 7 inch headlight assembly. Any recommendations as to which one will mount and wire up with minimal hassle? I expect to have to fabricate a new mount.
Thanks.

As long as you keep the H4 bulb, wiring won't be a problem.
And you're expecting to make a mount... so any one under the sun.

the vs800 and vz800 have the same mounting holes as the savage.

Are the VZ and VS 800 headlights 7 inch?

Seems like I remember someone here tried to use a VS800 headlight and the mounting points were slightly different.

I can't find that thread.

I have been scouring the internet and I think I found a suitable headlight. It is the JP Cycles "Custom 7" Headlight Smooth Housing" part #3100370, There was also one at Dime City Cycles with the same basic specs. but a little more expensive. JP Cycles is having a free shipping promotion. If there is any obvious reason why this headlight would not work, please let me know. Thanks.

VS800, get the one that bolts to the lower triple tree using the headlight fasteners. Same headlight. Going to run you anywhere from $250-400 unless you find one in a boneyard.

If the S50 still uses the old VS800 Intruder headlight, it is the exact same part as a Savage light. Plastic junk.

Get a side mount 7" bucket, lens, mounting ears etc and be done with it. I run the same one on my Savage that I had converted my VN800A to when I had it. Infinitely adjustable, you'll find exactly the right spot with it. And, if you mount it high like mine is, it improves the line of the bike versus the stock low mounted sucked in tight farce of a headlight.

Just my .5 cent (adjusted for inflation)... Roll Eyes

Here is a rather fancy and expensive adapter for the headlight mount.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HM2-Headlight-MOUNT-Suzuki-S40-M50-B95-Boulevard-VZ80...

I wonder if this kind of adapter doesn't push the headlight out front too far?

An adapter could be made out of an aluminum block that would have a stud mounted much closer to the existing holes, and just a bit taller.

Precisely:
First mount, re-mount:

That flat mount will have the headlight poking out forward, same as my first attempt.  I held the light and eyeballed where I wanted it placed, and made an adapter to mount it correctly.

That's right, the M50's rear suspension is a hidden monoshock arrangement ... originally used on the Volusia. The old VZ800 Marauder's headlight was a direct swap to the LS, so it's likely that the M50's will too.

any questions?

Thanks for the replies. The JP cycles headlight assembly I am looking at is not as deep as the one referred to in the links. I will just have to make an adapter plate to get the right front-to back and height adjustment.

Why not include a link to what you are looking  at....that way we all don't have to search.

I will try to figure out the whole picture thing. I am kind of "computer stupid" for lack of a better term. I have made other mods to the bike including: 18 inch rear shouldered alloy rim and spokes from Mikes XS (our hub is the same diameter, so the drill angle and spoke length are the same) laced by me and trued by a local bike shop, undrilled front alloy rim from E-bay sent with stock spokes and sent with hub to Buchanan's for drilling and assembly, so both rims match, Dunlop 4.00 X 18 rear tire for a more vintage look and feel, stock size front tire, front fender raised an inch for more clearance with brackets made by me, swingarm modified by me, rear turn signals relocated to license plate frame area, original seat cut down on a table saw to make it a solo, then padding added and reupholstered and raised about an inch on the frame, handlebars from a Honda Sabre with the original S40 one piece clamp shaved down to get it as low as possible so the cables (2006 model S40) would fit. (barely made it, had to cut handlebars down to 30 inch width), back of gas rank raised 3/4 inches to look less like a cruiser, heavy iron chromed side rear fender supports removed, raptor petcock, and Mike's XS Monza 11 1/2 shocks (will be replaced by higher quality shocks when I can afford them). I know it sounds like rolling swap meet but I like it and it fits me like a glove. I just need to lose the baby blue color. My son calls it a chick bike.
