I am picking up a new 2013 Suzuki S40 early next week.

Which service manual should I purchase?

If you are buying new off a dealer, you should get an owners handbook with the bike. The only people who seem to publish a "workshop manual" are Clymers. This manual may only cover up to 2008. There are errors in the manual and there is a thread in the tech section of this site concerning these errors. Many here would tell you not to worry about a manual and ask your questions here, they may be right. If you have a factory warranty on the bike , it may be best to leave servicing to the dealer until the warranty expires. Some on this forum will want me shot for saying this and you should be very alert and careful about any dealer servicing of your machine. There are downloadable versions of Clymer which are cheap, no guarantees as to accuracy.

I did get an owners manual off of the dealer.

I will order the Clymer Manual off of Amazon if that is all that is available. I will print out the information for the errors in the Clymer manual.

I want to know what needs serviced or repaired before I let the dealer at it.

The first question is what octane gasoline do you guys run?

Second question, what engine oil do you guys use.

The favoured oil on this site is Shell Rotella  T6. If the bike is brand new, I would let the dealer do the initial service to stop any warranty nonsense. You should then talk to the dealer about what servicing you can do yourself without compromising your warranty. Gasoline in the US should be 89-90 AKI anything higher is a waste of money according to the techies and I'm not one.
