Idle higher upright than on sidestand
09/17/14 at 16:11:47

Just when I think I have it all figured out! 2011 s40 raptor peacock, clean carb clean TEV idle screw 1 3/4 out.  For the bike going down the road good after have stalling issues related to TEV.  Set idle with bar mounted tach to 1200 rpm on sidestand. Rolling along after bikes nice and hot I notice at a stop rpm jumped up to 1500.  No big deal adjust it back down to 1200 and keep trucking. Get home and put bike on sidestand....rpm falls to 800! Center bike back up,Roma go back up? Is this a characteristic of the machine? If not any thoughts on the issue? If it is, then should I set idle speed for idle on the sidestand or upright? Thanks all!

If you do nothing at all just make sure that whatever position has the lowest rpm that you don't drop below ~1100.

Doesn't happen if I just move handle bars.  Maybe I'm asking too much of the machine to be perfect. Not only does no savage owner experience this issue, can't find info anywhere of any bike except one triumph forum.  Suggested float bowl on left side carb could be stuck causing starvation on one side.  Doesn't apply to single carb though.  To keep idle above 1100 the whole time then the idle upright is close to 1500.  Is that dangerous for the bike?  If it's fine then I'm apt to just leave it like it is.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the float might be sticking, out of ballance, dirty. Or maybe the needle is worn and sitting in the jet off center.
Next time you have the float out drop it into a pan of water and see if it is floating even. One of the two float chambers on the float could have a leak which would cause the assembly to sit out of whack.
Did it just start happening or has it been a problem for a while?

It's probably been happening, but I just recently installed the tach. My ear is not sensitive enough to have caught it before. But with the visual help I do notice the audible change.  I'll check the floats this weekend maybe and post an update if it helps.

I am adjusting when fully warm. Issue is in idle fluctuating based on how bike is oriented. Rises when upright, lowers when on kickstand

How immediate is the change in idle speed? For example, I know that if I'm riding on a 50 mph road for a while and I come to a stop light, it sounds like my idle is a bit higher than it was right after I warmed up the bike.  However, if I sit for a couple minutes, it seems like it eventually slows down.  I have no tachometer to compare by, but it was really just enough to notice.  I couldn't explain the phenomenon; I just figured it was a quirk of the simple design.

do you have brass floats or plastic?

main jet is in the center and pilot jet is close to it, lean shouldn't affect them.

I'd check your float height, maybe it's a bit low or try it a little higher.

Any experts please correct me if this seems like too much of a stretch, but I was wondering if a low oil level could play into this?
If the oil level is too low, could the engine be straining a little on the side stand when the oil is not getting thrown around enough; particularly up to the head?

OP, how's the oil level and what oil are you running?  5-40 or 15-40?

Oil level, if anything, is a little high.  Bought from dealer with fresh oil change.  Have only ridden 400 miles.  Not sure what weight oil is.
