In what appears to be an awkward moment of uncomfortable fact, ABC reports satellite imagery reveals an area of about 20 million square kilometres covered by sea ice around the Antarctic continent - the highest level of coverage since records began. This is the 3rd year in a row that the sea ice coverage has reached a record level - increasing at 1.5% each decade since 1979. However, there is another side to this, as the area covered in sea ice expands scientists have said the ice on the continent of Antarctica which is not over the ocean continues to deplete. The climate is changing, one way or the other.

For sea water to freeze, it has to be well below freezing point, i.e. well below 32°F.

For glacier ice to melt, it has to be above the freezing point, the same 32°F.

That said, my perception of this is that while the "Southern Region" is, as a whole, getting colder (and ocean water freezes over) the continent of Antarctica is, on its own, thawing.

Frome there, I speculate. For an entire continent to thaw, it means there is a source of energy (origin unknown and, at this point, irrelevant) which is causing continental temperatures to rise, albeit rather slowly.

This, in turn, may generate winds which blow UP, cold yet humid, from Antarctica and away from it;
once over land masses, they cool down, generating rainfall over Australia and S.America, and as dry (or, drier) winds return to Antarctica, generating a cooling effect which causes sea water to freeze over.

So... has anyone noticed torrential rains over S.America (lower portions of Argentina and Chile) and/or Australia ?

What remains to ascertain is... what IS the source of energy which is causing Antarctica to thaw over ?

The weakening of the Van Allen Belt ?

HAARP, anyone ?

Because the only other possible cause I can think of, is...

Climate is a-changing .. no doubt

While I watch a Youbetube near daily on the subject.. I had not seen it presented in such a way. Odd.. I have to go take a look.

As to the two seemingly at odds condititions... While I cannot explain it ...I certain suspect my own much more sinister issue. Temperature affect salinity and salinity in turn affect ocean currents. As air temperature increase the affect on water temperature, density, and salinity all come together to affect ocean currents.

While I have not put forth any effort to investigate it.. I suspect we are seeing just such a change and its affects. yes the dramatic rise in flooding hitting the east coast of S. America has been noted. its only a non-reported issue because its already a very wet place with little (comparable) population. Far more reported is the West coast of the US with its long continuing drought. A drought so bad.. that land mass is rising.
Even today, a hurricane hit the baha and is now on its way to once again flood AZ... but only it sends only winds to hamper fire control in CA ( but no rains to help).

If a dramatic ocean current change DOES happen, it could re-map the world with regards to "normal" weather patterns. Humanity.. indeed all life on the planet would find itself racing to see who could adapt... or die.

Global Warming (tm) is a phenomena where the temperatures rise soo high that everything freezes and all governments are forced to become Socialist. Grin

Because with socialism and the light reflected from Venus through swamp gas and throw in some carbon tax credits and living wages and then BOOM, paradise!! Makes perfect sense.

The glaciers and ice chunks are sliding into the ocean and cooling it- The ice in the ocean is building as the interior is melting.
