Seller swore this tap was not harmful just check clearance soon.after about 30 milesit sounds much worse. Now there is gremlins grinding in the gearbox. Are there any knowledgeable Savage owners around Charleston, Sc who may be able to open it up and help solve the problem. Thank, Paul

1st thing to do is get the valves adjusted.
Make sure you're using the right oil.
Make sure your idle speed is above 1000 rpms

I would change the oil and check it for debree.

If this does resolve the issue then pop the head cover off and check the cam and rockers for wear.
And if you're in for a penny, you might as well go whole hog and check the cam chain tensioner.

Gremlins in the gearbox?... Are you sure?...

We have 3 common noises that are very often mistaken for engine noise...
1- headlight bezel ring
2- speedo housing
3- front belt pulley nut
You can check the headlight and speedo by pressing your hand against them as you ride (careful!)...
...the pulley nut needs to be checked with a giant wrench...32mm...

ok, I agree with both above comments. Listen to these guys they know their stuff. If you still cant figure this out or really just need some help doing it I would be happy to lend a hand. I live in Charleston (James Island) and have two savages and one is in desperate need of valve adjustment as well. Its just going to fail (less likely) or need replacing eventually anyway (more likely). Plus if you are already wanting to get at the head plug leak might as well do the chain too.
