WTF?!? Found this...now what?
08/17/14 at 10:13:34

Discovered this the other day while working on the bike.  I guess someone used the wrong sized bolt, and wasn't paying attention to what they were doing. Is this something I can leave alone without it causing any damage?  Huh It seems like changing this out will take some significant time and effort, and if's purely a cosmetic thing I'll just leave it until I need a winter project. Thoughts? Suggestion?

Thanks!

I don't think that bolt actually secures anything...

The 4 inside bolts hold the head on

The acorn bolt just up and to the right of it is one of the the exhaust header bolts, if that helps.

Looks like somebody did some head work and put the wrong length bolt in...

If it ain't leaking, I'd just leave it alone... (maybe clean up that broken fin with a dremel)...

yep, too long of a head cover bolt

when you stick a bolt in, about 3/8" should stick out, and if it takes more than 10 turns start worrying.

Sounds good. Here's another pic if it helps. Suggest just cutting the fin with a dremel? Like cut it off around where the bolt comes down?

....Or cut the bolt with the dremel, then heat the fin and bend it back up?

Personally I wouldn't cut the bolt in place.  The rough cut could damage the alum if you ever have to take it out.

Good point. I guess cut the broken part of the fin off then.

betcha there's another bolt in the headcover that's in the wrong place. And if it's the one that belongs where the one in the picture is, it aint holdin' much.

Well, I am gonna have to remove the cylinder head assy anyway in a couple days anyhow, I guess I'll check all these bolts anyways just to be sure.  Wink

Is Yamabond 4 the best product to seal the cylinder head assy? My guy at the local bike shop recommended it, but I wanted to make sure.

I dunno how I'd fix it,but whoever did that is one KRAPTASTIC Mechanic.
I'd be afraid of everything that clown touched to get In that far.
I can't help but wonder if that was the work of a dealership mechanic.

Best I can tell by the parts breakdown, that's a stud. (Well suppose to be). Chances are you can't fix the fin totally but I would try and be d it back. I personally wouldn't use heat on it either, you would only be asking for trouble.

I use SuzukiBond...but Hondabond or Yamabond work fine.  I prefer them over the other the other RTV gasket products as it seems to set up a bit slower and it allows more time to work, and it appear to have a bit more body to it.  The best part is that it is just black..not copper, not orange.....not bright blue.  Nothing screams 'This Engine has been worked on!" more than a glob of orange gasket goo squeezing out the seam.

Use the Yama/Suzi/Hondabond, and take a small wooden scraper and remove whatever has oozed out, then a light wipe with a rag wetted with some mineral spirits.  It is the stuff between the flat mating surfaces that does the sealing...not the goo that has oozed out.

Neatness counts.
