weird noise

changed spark plug and took carb off, rejetted and reinstalled. upon starting engine, from idle till around 2000 rpm I hear a strange hi pitched whistle/chirping noise. any ideas? also what is the best way to remove spark plug and be sure no dirt that seems to build up on and around the plug gets into the engine? I just love removing the tank to change the plug.

In the tech section there is a thread about modifying one of the covers to gain easier access to the spark plug.  Here is the link.

I think most people who have an air compressor just blast air around the plug to blow out all the dirt prior to removal.

Are you using the stock muffler? As those things age and rust internally, they can start making whistling and chirping noises. It can start doing it overnight.

When I bought my Savage, the muffler started chirping within a week. An HD Dyna muffler solved the problem.

Yep, I blow the spark plug area out with an air hose before taking the plug out.

The noise could be coming from the spark plug if you got a piece of grit under the washer that is allowing a leak.  It could also be an air leak in the carb flange.

Seeing that you took the tank off you may have upset your speedo.  Unless of course you already took care of the rattling problem then just disregard this post,  When you rev the bike and hear the sound, firmly push down on the speedo and see if it goes away.

And try the headlight too...that thing can rattle and sound like it is coming from the engine as well.  I thought my top end was coming apart....until I placed my hand on the headlight bucket and squeezed the  outer ring against the bucket.  The cure for me was to place a thick piece of tape on each of the tabs that holds the ring on.
