running rough on road trip
07/27/14 at 10:03:51
hi everyone,
I'm in the middle of a month long road trip and two days ago my 2003 savage starts sounding more BRAAP than usual, a bit more Harley sounding than usual when I accelerate. I've been using 91 octane the entire time. the oil was changed before I left and I've added about 1/4 cup twice and kept an eye the levels. I have been mostly in the mountains with about 50-75 lbs of gear added, so the riding has been harder than when I putz around town. I'm about the same altitude as home so far. he power of the bike is fine, it just sounds different. what do you all think? should I worry? thanks in advance

could be your muff is rusted out. not much you can do about it.
but check your header and muff clamp.

it's the original muffler. the clamp is tight, but there is rust at the exhaust end of the muffler.

might be backfiring more because of the reduced backpressure.
i wouldn't worry about it unless they are the weaponizied kerpows.

Mountain riding?... or higher than usual humidity?... That'll give you extra pops and blats...
I wouldn't worry... enjoy your trip...
