S40 stalling while shifting down
07/02/14 at 10:49:39

Hello guys - I am new to the forum and also recently got my first bike S40 (2011, 5K miles).

I am having a problem while downshifting from 3 to 2. Bike stalls while the clutch is still engaged. I am not sure why - is it my driving style?

I have ordered a new AIR FILTER that I am putting today. Previous one looks like was never changed or cleaned.

I have a feeling the idle speed is too low. Bike dont stall at idle after initial warm-up but I feel the revs at idle are low. Is this causing the stall as well when I am downshifting?

Thanks.

Yes,.. and raise it up, right away...
Too low an idle speed will destroy cam bearings... oil pump needs 1,000rpm to make adequate oil pressure...

Raise that idle! Remember around 1,000 to 1,100 rpm. Could also help to clean the carb and the tev. When I did all three of these the bike ran great.

Thanks guys for a quick response. I dont want to sound dumb but how do you figure out the RPM. Bike doesn't have a tachometer. If I get a tachometer where to hook-up?

One more Q: The manual says before you adjust the idle speed, start the bike (if cold) at 2000 RPM for 10 mins. I dont have much exp with bikes but should I be ever concerned with the overheating of an air-cooled engine if kept running and not driving? want to get some word on this as well from experts.

If the bike will run down a level street at 8 -10 mph in first gear with the throttle completely closed and the clutch lever released the idle speed is pretty close to where it needs to be.

A little too high is better than too low.

New Air Filter in and I tried your tip, first gear, throttle fully closed and bike starts a bit as i release the clutch but if i release it fully i can feel it will stall.

you should get it going then let it idle down.

Check at 1:12 in this video. That idle speed is reasonable, in my book.

Cheap analogue tachs are aviadable from people like JP Cycles and Catalyst Cycles in the States, these people have websites you can google them. Regardless of the colour of you bike, get a white face black dial one.

Get the bike rolling first, just like you were going for a ride. Then close the throttle. If you just release the clutch while stopped with the engine idling it is going to stall.

Looking at the video I think I need to increase idle. I also happen to see a brand new S40 being sold to a customer yesterday and noticed the revs where high at idle than mine. Let me try this first.

One more thing guys and I am not sure if this is interconnected...

The bike fires up all fine in just few second from cold with/without choke.
But once it warms up and this stall issue happens to me (as described during downshift) starting it again takes a bit longer cranking up. Is there any issue with the spark plug? I ca check the battery voltage as well. But let me know. Bike has 5K miles only and is 2011 model.

Raise the idle... NOW!...
Figure out the other possible problems once you have a safe idle speed...
You are hurting your engine every minute that you run the idle too low...

The issue may go away once you have a safe idle,.. or it may not...
You need to get the idle up first and foremost...
No more checking or wondering,.. jes' do it... Wink...

Knurled knob by the choke,.. turn it clockwise...

It's OKAY to be wrong on the high side.
LOW is Fatal for the motor.
