fork seals
07/26/14 at 22:47:17

I had a shop quote me 250 bucks to do fork seals. That seems like alot for 20 bucks in parts. Ive been watching some videos and it dosent look to hard to do minus the tool that you put down the fork to get the bolt out.

Other than that special tool are their any other tools I need. I saw someone use pvc piping as a fork seal driver.

Try cleaning the seals first... most seals aren't actually blown...
They just have grit under the seal...
There is a cheap tool for this, or you can make one from a pop bottle in 1 minute...

I just had a really bad gusher... and fixed it in 1 minute with a sliver of a soda bottle...
... or, if you aren't into cutting soda bottles... buy these guys plastic tool...

Take a look at video... just get some scissors and cut a piece od soda bottle to same approximate size and shape...
and use it the same way as the vid...

If that's too complex... buy the tool they sell... it's dirt cheap...
I just didn't want to wait for shipping.... so I made my own...

My left fork was leaking.  Not bad enough to cause an issue I do not think.  Cleaned it again and was dreading replacing the seals.

Read the post about the $5 tool and watched the video.  Printed a high res photo of the "tool" and used it as a template

BAZINGA!

Took me a wooping 5 minutes to make the tool and "clean" both forks.  No more leaking!

I just might have to try this on the cylinder of a mini excavator, But I'll wait till I'm about to remove it to send it out to be repaired.

I'm nominating this thread for inclusion in the "table of contents with links" in the tech section. In the list of front suspension links maybe ?

The seal mate is in the 1st fork seal replacement thread.
But I think you need something more visual so I'll add the video and bots instructions.

So I popped of the cap at the top of my handle bars and the fluid looks low. How High should it be? Also my suspension in the front feels soft like it has no rebound. Will adding more fluid stiffen it up?

You're going places you shouldn't go,.. and doing things you shouldn't do,.. and you're going to break something...

You shouldn't just add fork oil will-nilly... you will blow a seal for real...
You have to pull the tubes and drain them, and measure the new amount...
It ain't real easy... but then you know how much you got...

Perhaps a very experienced person might risk just adding some... but it's still a gamble...
