Planned obsolesce, has been going on a long time.
Many years ago, a fellow who worked in the Cities, for a large farm tractor company, when asked: ” what do you do”, His response was: “ I Machine, 40 years off the life of gears, before they are installed in new tractors”
30 years ago, I went to replace incandescent light bulbs, in a, TALL, storage shed. I was tired of having to do that every year. So, I, ’special’ ordered, 130V light bulbs. (They were like hens teeth finding and ordering) I put them in, and then had to replace, one or two, about every 10 years after that. Gee, look at the light bulb, it says, “120v”, when you are pumping a average of 124v into it.
Buying small engines. If They are new, take them home, run for 5 min, with no load, then drop the oil, It will come out BLACK, with LOTS of Metallic Swirls, in the drain oil. Run again for 5 min, change oil again. You will do that for 3 to 5 times, Before, the oil, comes out, looking the same, as going in. And their are no, Metallic Swirls, in the drain oil pan. YET, every ’salesman’, will tell you: “This has oil in it, just run it for 50 hours, then change”
Right now, a 800-850 Lumen, LED, light bulb, (about 60 watt), is, ’stated’, to last 20 years. When incandescents, are hard to find. When people, FINALY, understand, CFL’s, contain MERCURY, and NEED to be recycled, instead of just thrown in the garbage. And LED’s, are all over the place. Their lifespan, will be down, to a year or two.
In 1960, my Dad, bought a, New, “Lawn Boy” lawn mower. it cost 300.00. Substantial money in 1960. But, I mowed lawn with that for 12 years. It, (as much as I wanted it to), Just Would Not Quit!
Today, you can go to any, mart mart, and buy same brand for (+/-) 125.00 And you would be, darn lucky to get 5 years out of it. Then, ’throw it away’, cause NO one will know how, to fix it.
Perhaps their is someone, who is, modifying/fixing that starter, like the LS650/S40 chain tighter.
But, it only, ‘reportedly’, cost 7.00 to, ‘fix’, the flaw in the Pinto. 7.00, sounds cheep, until you multiply that by 100’s of thousands !
Go to a dealer, buy a new 2014 S40, Run it for 10,000 miles, and the tightener falls out, and grenades the gears. And/or the engine is not running as it should, because, (even though you have changed oil), their is no Zink in it. The petcock fails, and you have to spend 80 for a new one.
All, designed, so you can buy a, ’new’ bike, in Less time, than you normally would, had you known about those things.
A-yep, ‘Planned obsolesce’. and, ’throw away’.
