broken mirror holder, how to remove mirror stalk
07/11/14 at 15:50:39
So bike was tipped and right hand mirror holder broke. Exact same problem as noted here:
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1244246887
I found the broken part online and it's pretty cheap. Looks like this pic
http://images.cmsnl.com/img/products/holder_big5967138A00-01_1124.jpg
. It's basically the holder part near the brake fluid.
Problem is, I can't seem to get the mirror stalk itself off the broken holder. It looks pretty straightforward, just unscrew it, but I've tried with wrenches, tons of elbow grease, adding lubricant, etc. It won't budge.
Am I overlooking something stupid and/or does anyone have any advice?
TIA!

Put some spray lube on it and leave sit for awhile.Probably just corroded in.Steel and aluminum don't go well together. And you ARE going counterclockwise correct?Only Yamaha uses left hand threads.

50/50 acetone and transmission fluid. Best penetrating oil you can get.

Don't forget that the locknut at the base of the stem must be loosened before you unscrew the entire mirror assembly. You should be able to hold the mirror and loosen the locknut with a 17mm wrench.
