Speedometer  Cable & Exhaust Clamp questions
07/01/14 at 10:04:33

1. Can the internal rotating part of the speedometer cable be replaced without also having to replace the external jacket part. What do you guys do? Replace the whole thing.

2. Previous owner tried to fit up a fishtail muffler to the bike. Seems like it will be ok but like everything else he did, he didn't finish the job. No muffler exhaust clamp. I saw some at the auto store going down to as small as 1 1/2". What size do you guys think will work?

2"?? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Pro-Elite-Stainless-steel-exhaus...

3. Spark Plug socket. This craigslist "project" bike doesn't have a tool kit. I had a time removing the spark plug. My sockets are really to thick walled. What are my options? Buy a cheap tool kit on ebay if I can find one or has anyone had luck finding something in one of the auto stores that works. Guess I could get one from the local motorcycle shop, it's not suzuki but maybe motorcycle spark plug sockets are pretty universal? (Has good spark and fuel tank very clean)

18-19MM Deep Well Socket??

Previous owner also managed to lose a washer when he removed the stator side cover for some unknown reason. Caused the starter to lockup and not rotate the motor. Probably why he decided to sell the bike. He also put ape hangers on it but non of the cables are long enough now.  So I'm planning to replace the handlebars as well. Huh

1" handlebars??

1. That's the way they are usually changed on a car.  On a bike, I see no reason you couldn't even if you had to buy the inner and outer.  Just be aware that there may be something wrong with the cable housing that cause the cable to break in the first place.

2.  I believe it's 1 3/4.  Here's the harley muffler thread in the tech section.

3.  Spark plug, I believe, is 18mm.  I use a normal craftsman deep well socket to remove mine.  I am sure you can get a dedicated wrench at most motorcycle shops  or just use a socket and ratchet.

Bars are 1" on all years.

The stock speedo cable is captured... never really looked at it so can't tell you how.

18mm some aftermarket plugs are different though.

1" bars, you'll want to stay lower than 10" to use the stock cables.
otherwise you'll need to be inventive in your cable routing.

I have an inner that I pulled out of the cable.....I cut the outer cable as I just wanted to use the nut.  I don't remember anything capturing this one.

If you want the inner send me your address and pay the shipping, and it is yours.

Really appreciate that Dav. I will definitely send you an email later on tonight and gladly pay the shipping cost. A new speedometer cable costs $50 so I am very greatful for your generous offer to help me with this. This forum is the best!! I just came back from a family reunion that took me through Texas Arkansas Tennessee Kentucky and West Virginia. Kentucky is a great place to ride motorcycles and so much better than the fast-paced hustle and bustle of Houston Texas.

Appreciate it. Smiley

Also...if you do change your plug or just take it out to check the gap, color whatever...make sure before you do....clean out the hole first...scrape around in there and then either blow stuff out or vacuum it before removing the plug.....
you would not believe some of the stuff I've found...
