The video is now public and here is the video with the vacuum lines plugged and it running on prime. The bike sounds a lot louder. Espically the backfires Smiley

Oh yeah... I'd pull the clutch cover right away and check out the tensioner and chain.

That tensioner looks pretty far out to me.

Yeah, 17mm is about the serviceable limit. I think you got lucky. Definitely the Versy tensioner mod at the least. The chain should still be serviceable.

How do you service the chain? If I got a new chain would it push the plunger back in so its not close to 17mm?

Also when I pulled the tank off gas came out of the line for like 2 seconds not even an ounce of gas. Is that normal. Shouldnt the gas have all drained through the line?

There's no servicing a chain, you simply replace it.

Yes, a new chain will push it back in, probably to 9 to 12mm.
but you'll be doing that every <insert your current mileage here>.
whereas with a versy adjuster you'll get twice as much mileage out of the chain.

Yeah I do want to do the adjuster I just dont have 170 bucks laying around at the moment. I was figuring the chain would be alot cheaper and get me riding for a bit while I save up for the adjuster

Start with the Versy, youll wring the rest of the service life outta that chain. It wont ALLOW the worn cam chain to destroy your engine, so ya get peace of mind AND save $$$ on cam chains.

The local Yammy shop charged me about $26.00 for the Raptor petcock.
Someone recently bought one online, paid about $7.00. Looked like an Official Yamaha box, but the petcock was a way crappy Chinese knockoff.. so be careful.

Of all the mods a guy CAN do, those are the 2 that simply should be done. I dont get a nickel for advertising the Versy, but I am 100% impressed by them & can see no better way to protect the engine from its built in land mine. The stock petcock can create so many oddball symptoms when it starts acting up.. Its really bizarre the troubles it can cause, but when it fails AND the float valve in the carb isnt perfect at the same time, gas can get in the oil.. & that aint no good at ALL..
So, Id recommend the Versy & of course, youre already on the Raptor thing. Just dont get excited & buy the worlds cheapest Raptor petcock,

Figure in your labor cost. The chain may be only $60 or so, but it takes hours to swap it out. Very easily could end up taking an entire weekend the first time. Lots of head scratching, beer breaks and trying to find the tools you gave flying lessons... I'd honestly prefer to scrap the bike out than change an OHC timing chain. At least with a Savage you don't need to remove the cylinder and split the cases like you do pretty much any other non-v-twin Japanese OHC bike, pop off the head cover and clutch cover and it is right there.

You dont Hafta spring for all that $$$,, you can forgo the roll pin "stop" in the slot ( OR, look at what Versy has & make one,, Really, a dremel, a drill, a roll pin.,.) Or, just take a pic to a welder & show him what ya want,, have that "extra hole" tab welded on the plunger,,
Ask Versy what he would charge to slot & pin one that already has the tab on it.
Do you have a drill press? If so, do you have a vise that has the screws built in so it can move the part under the drill bit? Get a mill tip & cut a slot..Lots of ways to do this & save $$$. YOu should be able to get your tensioner at least extended for less than the cost of a new cam chain,.
