not meaning to go off topic too much here, but... is there any advantage to removing the decomp solenoid in favor of a lever? or is it just cleaning up the wiring and number of components? My bike is still fairly new so I've had no problems with it, just curious as to why this mod is done so much?

I don't believe it's a necessary or particularly useful mod. It would appear to be done by those who want to look and feel "old school" or "cool", fine that's their choice. It's a little akin to putting a non synchro gearbox from a 1928 Plymouth Four cylinder into a Chrysler PT because it's "retro".

The manual decompression is mostly done when a different tank is installed, and the new tank does not have room underneath for the solenoid.
If you are not changing tanks....not sure why you would want to remove the solenoid.

Once the relay gets full of water and shorts out, you're starting w/o it anyway...
Ran my 98 for years with it not working. Removed and tossed in the trash last year. If it becomes a problem I'll fit a small cable and knob at the rear of the gas tank. Or make the left grip functional like the spark advance on a real Harley Davidson.
