idle mix screw

Ok guys I went to adjust the idle mix and the brass plug was already taken out. So not knowing what it's set at if I turn the screw clockwise that will close it correct?? Once I have it closed all the way how many turns counter clockwise is a good starting place to start my adjustment from?? I'm trying to cut out some of the backfiring and popping when I idle down to stop.
