Straight to the battery,.. or a solid frame ground, and tap the hot off the battery side of starter solenoid under the seat. (same difference electrically, just a locational preference)...
Have a fuse between the the battery and the hot connector...
(appropriate for the wire gauge... or use a 20amp if you don't know)... just in case it shorts...

mounted mine to the swing arm brace & put the fuse in the "tool" box.

Mounted one up front on strut, with a ground on the front frame at the triple tree.
Hot wire off the battery, with an inline switch between front of seat and tank on the right side, fuse inline with switch.
Use it mainly to charge phone or the gps.
