You can also run mini Linux programs and do a "dual boot".

If you want to keep your windows, when you load up the Linux program tell it to create a "dual boot"

When you log on there will be a screen with four options two for windows and two for your new Linux
arrow down to boot to Linux normally and there ya go..
you will probably have to create a log on name and password, just don't forget it... I keep having to hit and miss mine....

I am still playing with my windows 8 on this new laptop but log onto the small laptop every other day to play with it a bit... still learning

Every modern linux installer allows to preserve existing windows installation, so yes, dual boot is definitely something to consider. Ubuntu can be configured to log into certain user account automatically without entering password. Not very secure, but convenient for people without much computer background. My mom's computer is configured in such way. You still need to remember password to do administering that would require superuser (root) access.
