Do oem mufflers generally go bad?  I have an 06 and it has started to whistle.  It still runs good; but, it is annoying?  Maybe a baffle, if it has one?  Perhaps the seal where the header pipe attaches is compromised in some way.  Also, it isn't backfiring as much as it used to.  Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

All mufflers go bad eventually...
If you are near moisture... it will happen faster...

Good time for a Dyna take-off swap...
They are cheaper, lighter, stronger, and sound better...

I hate working on a bike, just to make it run like it used to...
Making it better... is a different story... Wink...

Roger that, I have spent a lot of time and resources on it this past year.   After I fix the speedo, replace the pet, align the belt, adjust the valves, check the cam chain, I'm sure that would be a real good idea.

My 06 sounds like that too..like a VW Beetle.

pgambr, pay no attention to the men behind the curtains. You can use the muffler off a Night Train with no carb mods on en OE bike except maybe a little adjustment of the screw on the right front of the carb. Not loud, but not unpleasant. Serowbot was kind enough to put a photo in the muffler tech section since I'm kinda' dumb. No transition piece is necessary and the stock bracket and clamp can be used. The front screw boss may need grinding down if it interferes with straight mounting. I am the lone voice in the wilderness pushing this muffler.  Grin Less than $30, requires one 1/4-20 bolt and washer, soda can gasket, and a shield to hide the joint. One hour job if you wear mittens.   Wink  After about 15,000 miles it is a little more mellow, but not loud.

Thanks, I'll certainly check it out.  I consider my mechanical aptitude to be a notch above inept.  Hence, the less mods necessary to make it work the better.   Cheesy
