Two important Chain Cam questions
11/10/13 at 17:48:28
I have a couple of questions:
1) If your cam chain is stretched to the point that it is starting to make the noise that was recorded by another board member here, do you have to replace the chain or can you just install a Versay mod chain tensioner? if you do this how many miles is average before you have to replace the cam chain?
2) What is the average mileage that Mr. Cam chain usually starts a knocking?
Do you have to replace the cover gasket when doing a Versay mod?
Thank you in advance. S40 Guy.

Until Versy comes along to correct my wrong answers.
Something around 12,000 miles can be expected from the chain and unmodified tensioner. Some people can get considerably more mileage - but 12,000 miles is when you should expect to look it over at a minimum.
With the Versy tensioner installed and the new hole used.....another 12,000 miles is a possibility.
When you have used up the second hole....time for new cam chain and then you can start the process over.

Mine also. Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye out when I get around 12,000. S40 Guy.

If you are a by the book fella, the owners manual has you torquing the head bolts every 4k miles. You also should take a look at the clutch throwout rod. So there's reason enough to open it up and take a look every so often.
somewhere between 10k and 30k, it'll start knocking. Teach your right ankle to listen for it. But there's no guarantee it'll do that, so inspect, and measure. We'll be able to estimate how long you've got.

and most likely you'll need to change the gasket. some can be saved, but better to have one than not.
