Replacing my buckhorn handlebars

Hi everyone. New to the forum. I recently purchased a 2004 Savage with only 400 miles on it. I've given her a good tune-up, cleaned out the carb and she's running great. The only problem I have is that it has buckhorn handlebars. Halfway through my morning commute, my right shoulder is killing me because of the way I have to twist it to hold the throttle open. :'(

I just want to get some standard handlebars but I'm having a heck of a time trying to find some that will work.

I'm hoping you can share any information about after-market handlebars that you've switched to and which you've liked.

I'll let you know how they feel but I'm sure they will be much easier on my arms and hands. Good luck in your search.

My opinion? Sit on the bike, eyes closed. Place your hands where your hands should be. Now open your eyes and figure out want bars you need to get.

For my, a little more higher. I got a cheap 10" mini-ape, swapped out the buckhorns, everything fit except the brake hose so I ordered one. Got my Sawzall and removed about 1.3" off the ends. Very good.

We can use any 1" bar -- meaning we can use near Harley Davidson handlebar. I got mine from jireh.com sold from midwest-mc.com which do not sell retail. darn! I got my bar for $27 -- yeah, cheap, cheap chrome but you could try various bars to get one perfect.

Odds are pretty good there is an extra XS650 rear section floating around my place.Will need a good polishing before you install it if you like the blinged out look (I don't, oven cleaner and then paint over the etched metal).

I'll see if I can find it, but as much as I hate shiny it may have been junked already. Getting ready to sand and black out EVERY speck of remaining chrome on mine. I really and truly loathe chrome, even going to black out the bars, perches/levers, headlight ring and if I can figure out how to make paint stick, the fork tubes (or get more fork boots), fender tips, peel off the edge trim and replace it with black versions...

Chrome ranks right up there with work on my list of filthy words. Wink

That's after this storm hits us...we are in the middle of the projected path....sigh....
