Posts: 90	Repositioning rectifier, any ideas? 09/25/13 at 09:10:54 I want to move the rectifier that's below the rear seat because I'm taking the rear seat and sissy bar off, any ideas on where it will fit or is it safe to ride where it's at?

Thanks I appreciate it, did you have to drill it into the frame? I also was wondering about putting a pod air filter on mine and getting rid if the air box, but I noticed the drain plug and occasionally the air box will get some kind of oil and/or gas mix into it and was wondering if that would cause a huge issue with a pod filter

Reply #3 - 09/25/13 at 11:33:44 I've had mine mounted like this for well over a year now with no problems - even in the hottest Texas summers. It's just zip-tied to one of the rear fender mount brackets. No evidence of melting or overheating. Gets plenty of airflow, and it's sitting right against another big hunk-o-metal.

I used a K&N 1250 and just put it on the carb at first. I read somewhere that having a longer straight intake track was a good thing, (don't ask me how. I've slept since then and thus don't remember) so I decided to modify the rubber intake track to the airbox to work with my K&N. I shaved down the inner diameter on the filter side of the rubber track, and my K&N actually fits INTO the track. It looks like this:

For the airbox, I chopped it up because I wanted to keep my side covers. The left side of my box is just a mounting bracket for my black box and solenoid:

The right side is an unfinished storage box. My plan is to use fiberglass to complete the shape and use the box to store tools. I'll have a screwdriver taped under my seat to take off the cover, though I normally have my Leatherman on me anyways.

It's unfinished, but it looks like this:

All closed up, it looks like this (minus the sissy bar that I traded for a stock one):

One thing I DON'T have pictured is the inside of my K&N. I had to support the inside in order to mount it into the rubber I took a large hose clamp and I cut the gear screw off so that it was just a big metal band. Then I put it inside the rubber throat of the filter so that it pressed against the rubber track clamping down on it. Without this, it just tries to fall off.

Mine is on the rear fender forward mount. It was in the airbox from 1999 until 2007. Bike has changed again since this pic 2 weeks ago or so, went to low bars off a Police Road King. Starter relay is in the battery box so called tool compartment, push button will be as well.

Yes that is a front drum, yes I'm insane, no, don't do the swap yourself.

Looks a lot more like a motorcycle with the low bars. The apes made it look like a toy.

Reply #8 - 09/25/13 at 13:26:15 It can kinda smell like gas sometimes, but I just attributed it to the uneven vacuum pulses of a big single. I've never had any noticeable amount of gasoline in it.

I often leave them in it when it runs... enough mods that your average joyrider wouldn't even be able to start it. Not like it's worth anything, just a beat to death commuter bike.
