1995 Suzuki Savage a good deal?
08/28/13 at 07:33:18

Hi all,

New to the forum and hoping to own a Savage soon. I am considering a bike for sale on craigslist for $1300 (despite ad, seller won't take less), it's a stripped down bobber with 16k+ miles on it.

I'll post the ad after this, as the forum won't allow links on my first post.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
-Parker

As with any motorcycle purchase, always go to see it in person and take someone knowledgeable about the bike you are buying. Sounds about the right price for a 95' that's got 16k on it.

Unless its the "look" you are going for, I agree with them, doesn't look worth that much.  But... it also depends on the area.  Maybe they have better resale value around you.

16k miles....  definitely check out the cam chain adjuster before buying.  It could be about to explode.

KBB.com gives the retail for that model, in excellent condition, as $1280. He is asking more for a bike with no muffler, no front fender, no turn signals, a rattle-can barbecue paint job, and he is telling you it doesn't run right when he talks about the backfire. The picture of the left side isn't good enough for me to tell whether it even has a tail/brake light, although it likely does along with a rear-hub mount license plate. If you really want a bike with that look, go buy a complete one and remove the parts yourself. That way, when resale time comes you can put the parts back or throw them in.

Charon +1.  There are just too many parts missing for it to be a street-legal bike (depending on local state laws).  Muffler, turn signals.  I would not want to get stopped by the police while on that bike.  Also, when all the stuff was stripped off, how was it done?  Stuff cut off?  Is the wiring harness chopped up?  That would all make it more difficult to retrofit stuff back on.

I paid $700.00 for mine and I live in Tampa and mine had all the pieces and looked about as good as this one.  I have seen newer Savages that look brand new for less than $1300.00 I would keep looking if I were you.

Bobbers may be cool and all.. but I am with the rest on this. It just does not strike me a good deal.  You PAY for a well done bobber... you do NOT pay for a motorcycle to have parts removed and called a bobber.

My 2003 with 475 miles.. all original everything in 2012 was $1900. I still only have 6000 miles to date. I suspect you can do better.

I don't see a license plate and light on either side.

I got my 95 for $500, with bags and a windshield, which I promptly removed and could sell.  He has $50 bars and a $20 fender as his mods, on addition to what was stated in previous posts.

Now I look a little closer I notice it is also missing the belt guard and the right-side mirror, and it looks as if the right-side fork seal is leaking. He must be pretty proud of his custom motorcycle.

Parts junker. $300 as it sits. It can run like a raped ape, and in its current condition, still be nothing but a parts roach. Very few places that bike is even remotely street legal. TN is one of them, and riding here is a horror show.

Just for comparison's sake, I just got my 2009 S40 with just over 600 miles on it for $2500.  Sure, that's 1k more than he's asking but it's in flawless running condition, had no cosmetic issues, and had 15,400 fewer miles on it!

My point is that you can surely do better if your budget is around 1500.  Just stay patient, would be my advice.
